MUSIC IN OUR SCHOOLS CELEBRATION AT MCMURRAY eters Township

The month of March was music to our ears at McMurray Elementary School . Not only were we looking forward to spring , but we also celebrated Music in Our Schools Month in grand style with performances and special decade dress up days .

“ We wanted to do something to celebrate music that involved all of our students , not just the students who have opted into band or orchestra or those who are singing in the chorus ,” said music teacher Joann Bair . The planning team wanted this to be something for all of McMurray Elementary to enjoy .
Throughout the week , the 4th and 5th graders learned about music genres spanning from the 1950s to the 1990s with samples being played on the announcements from artists such as Neil Diamond singing “ Sweet Caroline ”,

Stevie Wonder with “ Isn ’ t She Lovely ” and even a little “ MMMBop ” from Hanson . The creativity really came out when the decade dress up days were announced and everyone from teachers to students were told to break out those poodle skirts , leather jackets , tie dye shirts , neon and grunge for a fun dress up week .
“ The reaction was outstanding ,” added teacher Ray Cygrymus , who also heads up the chorus program at McMurray . “ I think as we came out of the pandemic , everyone was ready to have some fun .”
Part of that fun was also a school wide performance . All McMurray students take general music where they are introduced to basic chords , melodies and harmonies by playing the ukulele . With this common ground , the performance piece of the
