Q AND A WITH DR . PALMER

Dr . Nicholas Palmer
Why is orthodontics important ?
Orthodontics is more than just a straight smile . Common orthodontic issues we see in the office are overcrowding , gapped teeth , overbites , underbites , crossbites , and open bites . If left untreated , orthodontic issues can lead to tooth decay , gum disease , and abnormal enamel wear . When these issues are treated , it can help improve chewing , speaking and overall comfort , and help prevent tooth decay and loss by making it easier to maintain proper oral hygiene . Orthodontic care can also help to avoid expensive dental procedures that can result from untreated orthodontic issues .
When should my child see an orthodontist ?
Orthodontic problems rarely fix themselves . The American Association of Orthodontists ( AAO ) recommends that all children be screened by an orthodontist at age 7 . This is because by age 7 , your child has enough permanent teeth that an orthodontist can spot a problem early and catch it before it becomes a bigger problem .
Does my dentist have to recommend or refer me for an evaluation from an orthodontist ?
No . You do not need to wait for a dentist referral for your child to see an orthodontist . Although sometimes general dentists will tell you to see an orthodontist , you can schedule a consultation with an orthodontist on your own accord .
What if my child doesn ’ t need treatment ?
When you take your children for an evaluation with an orthodontist ( ideally at age 7 ), they don ’ t always need treatment . The orthodontist will monitor their growth and be able to detect any issues that may develop with their jaws or teeth . This allows the orthodontist to start treatment at the right time and avoid costly future problems .
Can adults have orthodontic treatment ?
Yes ! Today , 1 in 3 orthodontic patients are adults . Although some adults see orthodontists for cosmetic reasons , misaligned teeth can also cause issues ranging from excessive wear to gum disease , and can even make daily tasks like chewing difficult . It is never too late to see an orthodontist and achieve a healthy smile you love .
Are general dentists also orthodontists ?
No . A general dentist may be able to provide braces or aligners to move teeth , but general dentists and orthodontists focus on different aspects of dental health . Orthodontists are specialists in facial development , teeth alignment , and the bite . The orthodontist ’ s job is to make sure you have a smile that looks great and a bite that feels good and functions properly . Straightening teeth and aligning the bite are complex processes ; orthodontists are experts in both , and equipped to provide a custom treatment plan that is right for you .
What does it mean to be a board-certified orthodontist ?
Most people assume all orthodontists are board certified , but that isn ’ t the case . Board-certified orthodontists have committed themselves to you and your orthodontic treatment by successfully completing a voluntary , rigorous exam process ( in addition to dental school and an accredited orthodontic program ). Board-certified orthodontists must also renew their certification every 10 years to demonstrate their commitment to learning and excellence of care .
