WHAT ’ S NEWS IN PETERS TOWNSHIP
VOYAGER CIDER IS NOW AVAILABLE AT COEN MARKETS
Over the past year , Voyager Cider has spiked interest in its signature dry hard ciders with pop-ups and collabs . Now the business is tapping into the retail market , with offerings available at several Coen Markets in the Greater Pittsburgh area .
Though Voyager is a relative newcomer on the local craft cider scene , it has been years in the making . Co-founder James Bucki , a longtime home brewer of beer , began experimenting with hard cider about a decade ago . When he started taking his creations to parties , their popularity made it clear that Pittsburgh was thirsty for the sort of carefully crafted cider he was developing .
It was also at these parties that Bucki met Derek Luke , who had been making his own beer and wine since college , including during a stint in Alaska and a road trip in his 1977 VW Bus ( which the team now uses for pop-up events ). The two joined to become co-owners of the cidery , hiring Aaron Easler — founder of creative agency Easler & Co .— soon thereafter to create branding , logos and labels . It took a few more years of development and preparation , but in early 2024 , Voyager Cider began selling to the public .
Over the past year , Voyager ’ s ciders have become available at several Pittsburgh locations , including on draft at Iron Born Pizza and The Dog Penn in the Strip , De Fer Coffee & Tea , and Square Cafe in the East End , as well as in cans at Mercurio ’ s in O ’ Hara , Carnegie Beer Outlet , Beer Town locations in Dormont and Greenfield , and on the wine list at Lilith in Shadyside . The Coen Markets partnership is Voyager ’ s first foray into retail . And for new customers , a can of Voyager may be a first taste of something a little different . The company works with local orchards and uses heritage apples to create a cider with the complexity of wine . And with a focus on the character and quality of the apples , the ciders tend to be quite dry .
“ We ’ re excited to partner with Coen Markets and introduce our adventurous ciders to more people ,” said Easler . “ Our goal is to craft a journey in every bottle , and this journey is made better with the company of new friends .”
Voyager Cider is available at six Coen Market locations in Greenfield , South Park , Imperial , Clairton Boulevard , Canonsburg and Library Road .
“ We are constantly looking for new ways to impress our guests beyond the traditional C-store offer ,” said Julia Heitner , category manager at Coen Markets . “ We are local , and believe that local , authentic offers help make us unique and separate us from our competitors . As we continue to introduce locally made products to our portfolio , we are thrilled to welcome Voyager Cider into several of our locations .”
