Students on Team Betelgeuse at McMurray has a special visit in December from the Calgon Carbon Corporation . Amanda Lofty and John Matthis shared information on the many ways carbon is used in our world – from making our drinking water safe to removing odors .
Holiday Card Design Winner
This winter , the Peters Township Police Department worked with our Elementary Art teachers on a new holiday card design content . More than 900 interested students from Peters Township submitted entries and 5th grader Francesca Pietroforte from Mrs . Sines homeroom was announced as the winner during a special presentation on the morning announcements . In addition to having her artwork on the Police Department card , she received a framed copy of her artwork , a Target gift card and her homeroom received a pizza party at lunch courtesy of the Police Department !
All-Eastern Symphony Orchestra
High School senior Anne Chang has been selected to perform in the All-Eastern Symphony Orchestra . Selected based on her impressive resume of musical accomplishments and recognitions , Anne will be participating with musicians from schools up and down the east coast . The 2023 Eastern Division Honors Festival will be held in Rochester , NY in April . The event is sponsored by the National Association for Music Education ( NAfME ) and hosted by the New York State School Music Association ( NYSSMA ).
High School Spanish Alumni Visit
High School AP Spanish alumni came back in December to talk to current AP Spanish students about their experiences with Spanish after high school . Each former student either majored or minored in Spanish or is currently using Spanish in their careers . They ranged in age and experiences , but the one thing they all have in common is their love of the language and their belief that learning Spanish can help anyone in their future endeavors .
Best Buddies at Pleasant Valley
Pleasant Valley Elementary kicked off their Best Buddies program with a special breakfast . Students enjoyed a delicious breakfast and participated in a fun get-to-know-you activity . The Best Buddies program teaches students to be inclusive and kind .
Persuasive Students at McMurray
Fourth graders in Mrs . Kashak ’ s class wrote persuasive essays to convince classmates to pardon their turkey this Thanksgiving . Later in December , the students also used their persuasive powers to convince Santa to hire their elf for the season .
SkillsUSA Honors
PTHS senior Emma Raffael has been named the SkillsUSA Student of the Year for the Western Region . As part of the Cosmetology program at WACTC , Emma was a Skills USA PA State officer during the 2021 / 2022 school year . She has attended and served at the Pennsylvania Skills USA State Conference , has led a state initiative that supplied donations to the Ronald McDonald house , and she continues to lead the students at the WACTC through her advancement and training in the cosmetology program and Skills USA . eters Township
