The Company That Grew Organically

Thirteen years ago , as juniors in high school , Quinten and Anthony started mowing lawns and completing small landscape projects . There were no business plans drawn up , no capital investment — just a couple of high school kids hoping to earn some money for college by mowing lawns in their neighborhood . Their thorough and dependable service made them very popular , and soon they were mowing about a hundred lawns per week !

While they both completed degrees at the University of Pittsburgh , they continued to grow the business and perfect their trade . During this time they began to get into bigger landscape projects and built a solid team of local people , some of whom are still integral parts of the company today .
“ By the time we were done with college , our business had grown to the point where we knew we wanted to continue to build this company . That first year we were done with school , we really went all-in . Finally we were able to devote all of our time to the business and started to reinvest the profits into equipment . We quickly started to level up ,” explains Quinten .
Q & A Landscaping focuses on plants , patios and walls across the South Hills of Pittsburgh . A few years ago , the owners decided to move away from mowing lawns and focus on the landscape and hardscape projects . “ Even though we don ’ t perform weekly cuts anymore , we still do all of the other routine landscaping services ,” says Quinten . “ We also have a mulch blower so we do a lot of mulching and getting houses ready for mulch .”
He adds , “ Patios utilizing both pavers and concrete were always a big part of our workload , but that demand has increased since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic . We have completed some really nice patio and outdoor living projects
over the years . I really like creating new spaces and helping people to push the boundaries of their home outside .”
This ability to complete an extensive hardscape project from start to finish has been a plus for customers . When homeowners are dealing with multiple contractors for a project , it can add weeks or even months to a project ’ s final completion . “ I frequently see big outdoor projects being inefficiently pieced together and it usually results in the outcome being different than what was desired ,” Quinten explains . “ We provide thorough solutions and know what all needs to go into a project for it to be a success .”
A lot of new spaces not created by Q & A still get their finishing aspects done by Q & A : “ We do a lot of lawn and landscape installations after another contractor completes a big project . From a pool to an addition , or a simple patio , there is usually landscaping work to be done for the project to be truly complete .”
When asked about what ’ s new for this season , Quinten and Anthony were excited to share that Q & A Landscaping would now be offering continuous concrete curbing around the edges of landscape beds : “ We saw the need for a quality long-term border . There are a lot of really nice options to finish the borders once we install them . This will be a great finishing touch and will improve the ease of maintenance .”
