The Peters Township Fire Department (PTFD) spends
thousands of personnel hours each year on the education and
training of community members in order to reduce community
risk, prevent fires, and ultimately, increase public safety. It is our
belief that true public safety can be achieved only through the
intimate collaboration of a community and those public servants
that serve and protect them. To further enhance these initiatives,
PTFD recently resurrected its Citizen’s Fire Academy (CFA).
In conjunction with the North Strabane Fire Department,
PTFD welcomed a total of 16 students to our newly renovated
station and classroom facilities in October. This 7-week program,
designed and led by Peters Township Lieutenant Jordan Cramer
and North Strabane Captain Tim Liedl, along with a heavy
compliment of additional personnel from both departments had
this mission:
To increase awareness of both the emergency and non-
emergency services provided by the Peters Township and North
Strabane Township Fire Departments. This awareness should
result in a greater understanding of our organizations, the
financial and human resource needs, and the dedication required
by career and volunteer firefighters.

PETERS TOWNSHIP
The course was considered widely successful by both the
attendees and instructors. Participants covered and received
hands-on training on a wide range of topics including: fire
suppression, victim search and removal, emergency medicine,
vehicle and rope rescue, emergency management, and 911
operations. During the final class, students received a raw look
into the emotional and physical complications experienced by
firefighters across the nation.
We are so thankful to have had this incredible opportunity
to share our passion for public safety with this unique and
supportive group of students and it seems this feeling was
mutual. As Peters Township resident Judy Murgel mentioned in
her post-course survey, “I am a lifelong Peters Township resident
and had no idea how involved our fire department is in every
aspect of our community! I not only learned a lot but came away
with a true appreciation of our fire department and its team”.
