Best Buddies Programs Expand in Peters Township

On a table by the door, students proudly signed a banner reading“ We’ re All Rooting for Each Other!”— a simple phrase that perfectly captured both the mood and the mission of McMurray Elementary School’ s first-ever Best Buddies event.

Best Buddies is an international organization dedicated to fostering one-to-one friendships between individuals with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities. Within schools, these clubs create inclusive communities where all students can connect, share experiences, and build understanding.
On October 15th, McMurray Elementary officially joined the program under the enthusiastic leadership of teacher Catherine Gannon, who was thrilled by the overwhelming interest from students. Overall, more than 120 students took part in this first event.
“ So many students wanted to get involved— it’ s been inspiring to see their excitement,” Gannon shared.
Working alongside a team of supportive teachers, she kicked off the event by having students create personalized name banners
to hang around the school’ s central“ We’ re All Rooting for Each Other” display— a daily reminder to support, help, and respect one another.
Across the District, Best Buddies events have been creating opportunities for students to come together. Middle School students recently enjoyed a tour of Heinz Field, while Pleasant Valley students participated in a pumpkin painting event, crafting holiday placemats for Meals on Wheels recipients.
This year marks a milestone for Peters Township, as it’ s the first time all five schools have active Best Buddies clubs.
“ The growth of this program is a wonderful reflection of our District and community commitment to inclusion,” said Patricia Kelly, Director of Pupil Services.“ Best Buddies helps students see the power of friendship and reminds us all how important it is for everyone to feel valued and connected.”

Peters Township’ s Best Buddies clubs are providing opportunities where every student knows they belong, and we’ re definitely all rooting for that! eters Township
