If you’ ve walked, run, or biked along the Montour Trail near Valley Brook Road, you’ ve likely passed by Always B Smiling. What was once a stretch of undeveloped property, generously donated by the Robinson Family, is now a vibrant community hub dubbed by the organization as“ B Town,” offering yearround programming for children, teens, and young adults with disabilities and their families.
Always B Smiling was founded by Kristin and Dean Huibregtse in memory of their son, Bennett, who passed away in 2020 at age 16. Though Bennett lived with significant health challenges, he faced life with courage, humor, and a smile that made people feel seen, included and valued.
His spirit brought people together, and it still does today.
The Huibregtses created Always B Smiling as Bennett’ s legacy. They understood firsthand the challenges that families of individuals with disabilities often experience, the limited opportunities for truly inclusive activities, and the sense of isolation that can sometimes follow. They wanted to change that.
What began as a few adaptive bike rides from a small tent along the Montour Trail has— in just over four years— grown into a bike garage with six adaptive bikes, a fully accessible Activity & Learning Center opened in
August 2024, and a Sensory Zone launched this past July.
Every activity is powered by volunteers, including many Peters Township residents— from adaptive bike rides, family socials and school field trips to creative arts and hands-on life skills programs. Thanks to generous grants, sponsorships and donations, all programs are completely complimentary to participants and their families.
Something is Brewing and You Can Help Make it Possible
One of the largest needs for individuals with disabilities is continuous learning opportunities and a safe environment for young adults after they age out of school at 22 years old.
Always B Smiling’ s next big endeavor is the development of B’ s Trailside Café, an inclusive spot located in the Activity & Learning Center in Peters Township that will provide meaningful vocational opportunities for young adults with disabilities and a welcoming gathering place for the community.
The organization needs to raise $ 150,000 to open the doors to the café, hopefully by the spring of 2027. One of the ways to close the gap is with the 5th Annual B Together Night at St. Clair Country Club on Saturday, Feb. 28. This evening brings together families, local businesses and supporters for a night of food, fun and fundraising. Tickets and sponsorship information for this“ culinary journey across America” are available at alwaysbsmiling. org. Every dollar raised will help open the doors to B’ s Trailside Café.
Whether you attend the event, become a sponsor, donate an auction item, or simply help spread the word, your support stays local and creates real impact for families right here in Peters Township and the South Hills. Together, we can build more opportunities for connection, purpose, and joy.
