McMurray Rotary Club :
Six decades of giving and doing
You often see it .
Your parents saw it , too . And your grandparents . Perhaps your greatgrandparents as well .
It ’ s that familiar symbol featuring circles and spokes , bearing the words “ Rotary International .” Ah , the Rotary Club . Yes , you know about it . Or at least you know that it exists . After all , the organization has been around since 1905 . But what exactly is it that Rotarians around the world do , besides getting together for breakfast , lunch or dinner ? Let ’ s use the group based in Peters Township as an example . The McMurray Rotary Club will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2025 , and with the milestone comes an opportunity to highlight a legacy of giving and doing . On the philanthropic side , the club has raised and given away just under $ 2 million , with the money going toward causes varying from scholarships for Peters Township High School graduates to support for an orphanage in Cali , Colombia .
As far as doing , club members regularly participate in community-oriented events such as the annual Fishing Derby and Cleanup Day in Peters , along with hands-on support of projects by the internationally active Habitat for Humanity and locally based Always B Smiling , a nonprofit that provides engaging experiences for children and young adults who have disabilities .
In the process of giving and doing , members of the club have the opportunity to develop long-lasting friendships among one another while perpetuating the spirit for Rotary International ’ s motto : Service Above Self .
McMurray Rotary Club beneficiaries include :
• Scholastic — Rotary College Scholarships , Peters Township Interact Club , Rotary Youth Leadership Awards , 3rd Grade Dictionary Project .
• Local — Always B Smiling , Peters Township Fishing Derby , Peters Township Police Department , Watchful Shepherd , Meals on Wheels .
• Regional — Bradley Center , Zonta Club of Washington County , Washington City Mission , Operation Walk Pittsburgh , LeMoyne Community Center , Court Appointed Special Advocates ( CASA ), Food Helpers of Washington County , Angels ’ Place , Cornerstone Recovery Home for Veterans .
• National — Ronald McDonald House , Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs Inc ., CART Fund ( Coins for Alzheimer ’ s Research Trust ).
• International — Cali Orphanage , World Affairs Institute , ShelterBox , Polio Plus .
Rotary exists at the local , district , and international levels . The McMurray Rotary Club is incredibly proud that in the 2024-2025 Rotary year , one of its own members , Stephanie Urchick , is serving as the president of Rotary International , which includes all 1.2 million Rotary members worldwide . And she is only the second woman in the history of Rotary to serve in this position .
Stephanie has been traveling the world , spreading “ The Magic of Rotary ” and sharing the vision , “ Together we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe , in our communities and in ourselves .”
