GIFTING

One of the most important questions in financial planning is,“ What is the purpose of your wealth?” For most people, the answer is not simply to accumulate the largest possible investment account. Rather, it is to provide financial security, enjoy retirement, care for loved ones, and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

After preparing hundreds of retirement income plans over the years, I have noticed a common theme. Many families who have saved and invested diligently discover they are projected to have substantially more assets than they are ever likely to spend. Their investments continue to grow while their lifestyle remains comfortable. When that occurs, it is worth asking another question: Would you rather leave a larger estate someday, or experience the joy of helping your family and favorite charities today? For many families, the answer becomes clear. Helping children and grandchildren during your lifetime often has a far greater impact than leaving a larger inheritance years from now. A gift toward a college education, a first home, the start of a business, or simply providing financial security at an important stage of life can change the trajectory of a family’ s future. Assistance given when it is most needed is often far more valuable than money received decades later.
Perhaps even more rewarding is the opportunity to witness the results of your generosity. You can celebrate a grandchild’ s graduation, watch a young family purchase their first home, or help a child pursue opportunities that might otherwise have been beyond reach. These moments create lasting memories that no investment statement can ever equal.
Lifetime gifting also provides an opportunity to pass along values as well as wealth. Families can discuss responsible investing, financial stewardship, generosity, and the importance of giving back. These conversations help prepare future generations to manage wealth wisely while preserving the principles that helped create it.
The same philosophy applies to charitable giving. Whether your passion is your church, a local hospital, medical research, education, or another nonprofit organization, making gifts during your lifetime allows you to see the difference your generosity makes. You can meet scholarship recipients, support groundbreaking research, tour new facilities, or witness programs that improve lives within your community. There is a unique satisfaction in knowing your gift is making an immediate and lasting impact.
Thoughtful gifting can also provide meaningful tax benefits. Annual exclusion gifts allow many families to transfer wealth without gift tax consequences, subject to current tax law. Charitable contributions may generate income tax deductions, while donating appreciated securities can often reduce or eliminate capital gains taxes and increase the value of the gift. For individuals over age 70½, Qualified Charitable Distributions( QCDs) from an IRA can satisfy all or part of a Required Minimum Distribution while excluding the donated amount from taxable income. When incorporated into a comprehensive financial plan, these strategies can improve overall tax efficiency while accomplishing personal and charitable objectives.
At H Financial, we believe successful financial planning is about much more than investment performance. It is about helping clients use their wealth intentionally. Our goal is to help families maintain financial independence, enjoy retirement with confidence, care for those they love, and support the charitable causes that are most meaningful to them.
In the end, the most meaningful legacy is rarely measured by the size of an estate. It is measured by opportunities created, lives enriched, values passed from one generation to the next, and the satisfaction of knowing your life’ s work has made a difference. When your own financial future is secure, there are few investments that provide greater returns than generosity. Living your legacy today may ultimately become the greatest gift you ever give.
