MOVE IT
OR LOSE IT
Movement. It’ s absolutely essential to life as we know it. Even when sleeping, our body keeps the blood flowing through our beating heart, our lungs inhale and exhale air thanks to our moving diaphragm, and even our eyes go through rapid eye movements during sleep cycles. It’ s these movements that keep us alive.
Movement of our bodies, through our musculoskeletal system, is what enables us to live our lives. Yes, it’ s those muscles and bones in our legs that get us from point A to point B. Our muscles and bones in our arms and upper torso allow us to deeply hug those we love most. While it may get overlooked, we even use our muscles to smile, and to frown( although it takes far fewer muscles to smile, so don’ t overexert yourself!).
Our bodies are designed to move through actions coordinated by our brain. Intuitively, we know what normal movement should feel like and look like. Physically, our body will do its very best to adapt to whatever ailments we may face to move like we expect it to move. And adapt we will, until … our body just can’ t. When muscles, bones, and joints have altered or no movement, our body will either find a way to limit all motion or force other areas to compensate with more motion. This process will continue until motion is restored or joints become so degenerated that they need to be replaced. While medicine is amazing in the advancements it has made even in my lifetime, there is still not a surgical procedure to replace numerous spinal joints or even the entire spine.
That is where chiropractic comes in. Doctors of Chiropractic are trained to analyze the way the body moves through the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Through our examinations of the spine, we will determine areas of the body that have abnormal and / or restricted movements and restore motion through precise chiropractic adjustments.
What does altered movement look like? It is the infant with torticollis. It could be the child who is described as“ clumsy.” It is the adult with numerous tension headaches or the onset of unexplained low back pain. It’ s the adult who feels the need to get massages frequently due to tight muscles. It’ s our parents or grandparents who
