Peddler – Transient Merchants
Peters Township staff often gets comments and concerns
from residents about vendors going door to door to sell
them something. This could be anything from magazines to
furniture, cable service to hoagies.
The Township does have an ordinance that requires
certain vendors to register. Those individuals must
complete a thorough application form and go through
a police criminal background check. Once deemed
acceptable by the Police Chief they are given a photo ID
signed by the police chief (see photo).
Certain groups such as bona fide religious, charitable
and political societies, associations or corporations are
exempt from the permit process. This has been defined
by the courts through litigation. That means that people
campaigning for office or environmental organizations,
scouts, booster groups etc. do not need a permit.
The ordinance does provide an option for those that have a sign
stating “no solicitors” visible from the road. In this case, vendors are not
permitted to go on your property. If a permittee violates this, you should
call the police.
Also, if someone is soliciting without a permit and does not fall within
the rules of exemption, then you should call the police.
Another question that comes up often, especially in times when
it gets dark earlier in the day is: Why can’t we (the Township) restrict
vendors ’ hours? We use to have a time restriction that was too early,
based on court rulings. Our current allowed time for vendors is 9 a.m.
to 9 p.m. The courts have been willing to accept this time period.
Again, if you feel pressured or unsafe, ask them to leave and go
inside your house. Do not hesitate to contact the police by dialing 911.

Gifts Painting to
PT Library
On Tuesday, June 14 at 6:30 p.m., Township
Manager Michael Silvestri unveiled a very special
gift to the PT Library, on behalf of the PT Council,
to commemorate Pier M. Lee, who is currently
serving as the Peters Township Library Director
Emerita, and her 40+ dedicated years of service
(1974 to 2015) as Director of the Peters Township
Public Library. The magnificent oil portrait painted
by renowned local artist James Sulkowski, who’s
art hangs in galleries around the country including
the White House, brings out the brilliance of Lee’s
smile and charm. This elegant portrait will serve as
a lasting tribute to Lee, and as a public thank you
for her commitment to the excellence and growth
of our award-winning community library. You’ll
find this classic portrait, framed and hung by
J.J. Gillespie Gallery, upstairs in the Reading Room.
Richard Easton, President of the Library Board,
also welcomed Library Board Members, Director
Myra Oleynik, Paul Lauer and Ryan Jeroski to
congratulate Lee during this special evening.
