r. Lorelei Grunwaldt Falbo has never shied
away from a plastic surgery challenge,
especially when the odds are low.
“One of my most memorable cases was
in November of 2015, when I received
an emergency call for a 12-year-old boy
whose arm had been ripped off just below the
shoulder by a piece of farm equipment,” she said.
“The team was skeptical that we could reattach
the arm because the nerves were torn. But I felt, ‘This is a 12-year-old
boy—I have to give it a go.’”
Her commitment to her patient paid off, and his successful surgery
is now one of her proudest moments. Not only was she able to
reattach the boy’s arm in a grueling six-hour surgery, she was able to
give him his life back.
“He’s doing very well, has function in the shoulder and elbow, and
he’s now driving,” she said. “He’ll need some follow-up surgery for
hand function to improve, but he’s doing great.”
As a board-certified plastic surgeon and clinical associate professor
of plastic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Grunwaldt Falbo
has been well-equipped to face such challenges but is ready to go into
private practice for herself in Peters Township to be closer to home
and the community she loves.
“After 12 years at UPMC and Children’s Hospital, I’m ready for a new
chapter in my life and take on some different challenges,” she said.
Her new office will focus more on cosmetic surgery, especially
breast surgery, which she is well-known for in Western Pennsylvania.
Augmentations, lifts, reductions and asymmetrical corrections have
long been a specialty since she started practicing medicine after
graduating from Harvard College.
“I’ve seen a fair number of teens and young adults with various
concerns, as well as both young and older men, who sometimes
have concerns about the contours of their chests, which can impact
their day-to-day lives,” said Dr. Grunwaldt Falbo. “We will also have a
MedSpa, offering Botox injections, fillers and other skin treatments.
It’s a nice, quick way to have an aesthetic improvement with minimal
downtime, and usually it can be done in a lunch hour.”
She added that a lot of times people shy away from seeking out the
help of cosmetic surgeons because they simply don’t know what’s
involved, may have fears or concerns about surgical procedures or
may be waiting for a time in life when they can take time off from
personal or family commitments. A lot of those misconceptions or
questions can be answered during a simple consultation.
Dr. Grunwaldt Falbo will operate out of the Tri-State Surgery Center,
and will accept several large commercial insurance plans when
her private practice opens on June 1. She will maintain her clinical
associate professorship at the University of Pittsburgh as
well as her position as treasurer for the American Association
of Pediatric Plastic Surgeons and her membership with the
American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
The new office will be located at 3101 Washington Road,
McMurray (15317). For more information on all of the
services that will be provided, or to schedule a consultation
today, go to drloreleigrunwaldt.com, or call 513.582.9990.
