On Dec. 1, 2018, Peters Township resident Andrew E. Slavonic celebrated his 101st birthday surrounded by family, including his two children—Bob Slavonic and Sue Melzer along with grandchildren Jason and Jamie Melzer. Slavonic was born in 1917 in Pittsburgh. He celebrated 47 years of marriage with his wife Patricia until her passing in 2005. The couple lived in Whitehall before moving to Peters Township. Slavonic graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1934 and began working at a local machining company. During World War II, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, serving as a nose gunner on the B24 Liberator and top turret gunner on the B17 Flying Fortress. He also trained new pilots who were transitioning from two-engine to four- engine planes. After the military, he began working in stainless sales for U.S. Steel while attending night school at the University of Pittsburgh to obtain his bachelor’s degree. After graduating from Pitt, Slavonic worked for a few other local steel companies and retired from Allegheny Ludlum in 1996. Overall, Slavonic is in excellent health, and—at 101 years old—he is just starting to slow down. The family still gets together for weekly dinners. Slavonic attributes his longevity to his daily 4 p.m. Coors Light. Learning of his love for the beer, the company flew him and his family to visit the brewery in the Rockies. There he had lunch with Pete Coors and his son and had a VIP tour of the plant, where he got to drink Coors Light straight out of the “pigtail.” First row L to R: Dabria Dicenso, David Batchelder, Chris McKay, Paige Feltner, Becky Schneirov, Kate Hardy, Juliette Langley Back row: Hannah Rhodes, Caitlyn Williams, Alexandra Milchovich, Sophia Wilson, Morgan Powell, Jasmine Thompson, Amelia D’Addieco, Gordon Hardy PTHS STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN WASHINGTON COUNTY BAND AND CHORAL FESTIVAL Students from Peters Township High School participated in the Washington County Band and Choral Festival on February 15.
