NADINE ROAD IN PENN HILLS REOPENS TO TRAFFIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT RECEIVES $200,000 GRANT FROM THE HEINZ ENDOWMENTS TO SUPPORT MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM The Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) has received a $200,000 grant from The Heinz Endowments that will assist the department’s Maternal and Child Health (MCH) program in addressing infant and maternal mortality. “There are stark differences in health among population groups in Allegheny County, and understanding the reasons for these differences and how to mitigate them is essential to improving public health,” said Maternal and Child Health Program Manager Dannai Wilson. “We must continue to work to reduce barriers so that residents have full access to services that improve their health and well-being.” The grant period begins in January of 2020 and ends June of 2021. Funding will be used to increase awareness of and reduce barriers to MCH services and will provide the MCH program with new electronic case management system software. The digital upgrade will help improve communication between the MCH program and families that are served and will provide better functionality to help identify trends within the client population. In addition, funding will be used to evaluate current MCH policies and to develop a new policy or resolution that will focus on eliminating those factors that drive racial disparities in birth outcomes. The Allegheny County Department of Public Works announced that Nadine Road between Allegheny River Boulevard and Lincoln Road in Penn Hills has reopened to traffic. The closure began on July 12, 2019 following storms that caused a retaining wall to fall over and a portion of the road to collapse. Between August 20 and today, crews removed the damaged wall, excavated, constructed a new retaining wall, relocated utilities, and made roadway and drainage repairs. The work was done by Northeast Paving, a division of Eurovia Atlantic Coast, LLC, of Pittsburgh, as part of the $10.7 million 2019 Capital Roads Reconstruction contract. n Sign up today at organdonor.gov PENN HILLS ❘ WINTER 2019 7
