It’s at the “Y” If you’re looking for interesting activities for summer, you may not have to look any further than your local YMCA. The YMCA offers classes in some of the newest and most innovative fitness programs around that are designed for various levels of fitness and ages. For those interested in increasing their core strength and power levels, a Boot Camp class is offered with a combination of cardio, weights and plyometric drills. Cardio Interval training is a class which alternates short, very highly intense activity with longer, slower intervals for conditioning. Cardio Kickboxing is also offered which combines the techniques of boxing, martial arts and aerobics. A popular Pilates class will help individuals create flat, toned abdominals and long, lean muscles, while improving strength and definition. There’s been a lot of interest in body sculpting lately and with the Body Sculpting class, participants will learn to tone and strengthen all major muscle groups for a complete, well-rounded workout. If you’re the type of person who needs a little more inspiration in your workout, you may want to try the Latin Dance classes which explore salsa, merengue and the samba with a little hip-hop thrown in with aerobics. This unique combination of dances has been designed especially for Penn Hills. There are also Line Dancing classes and a Sankofa Dance and Drum Jam class. This interesting class will explore dance and drumming inspired by the continent of Africa. A Zumba class also offers another great alternative for fitness. The Yoga class is excellent for improving range of motion, breathing techniques, body awareness, muscle endurance and balance. For mature adults, the Silversneakers Circuit, Silversneakers Yoga and the Active Older Adult class keep seniors in top form.
