On a Mission to
Make a
Difference
BY PAUL GLASSER
F
or the last decade, Mt. Hope
Community Presbyterian Church
has made a difference in the Penn
Hills area.
Debbie Dillman took over as mission
chairperson about 10 years ago and
wanted to find ways the church could
have a greater impact on the local
community.
“By just sending checks, I didn’t feel
we were helping people in our own
hometown the way we could be,” she
explains.
In 2010, the church, located on
Frankstown Road, won an award for its
involvement in the community. “We’re
small but we do a lot,” Dillman adds.

Mt. Hope Community Presbyterian
Church is seeking donations and
volunteers to assist with various mission
activities. The oldest volunteer is 96 years
old, but members of the Penn Hills High
School Key Club also participate.
“It’s really neat to see the young and
old people working together for a good
cause,” Dillman says.
The Hearts and Hands program, which
benefits Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh
of UPMC, is one of the most popular
efforts. Every Thursday, from 10 a.m.
to noon, volunteers make muslin dolls
for patients at the hospital. Doctors use
the dolls to explain to children where
they will make incisions and insert IVs.
