How do I Know if I Need Hernia Surgery?
Most hernias need surgery but not always right away. If you have no symptoms, your doctor may recommend watchful waiting. Pain, swelling, or limits on daily activities are common reasons to choose repair.
Hernias don’ t go away on their own and can get larger or harder to fix. In rare cases, they can become trapped or strangulated, which is a medical emergency.
What Does Recovery Look Like After Hernia Surgery?
Most hernia surgeries are outpatient procedures, but for larger hernias, your care team may recommend that you stay in the hospital overnight for monitoring.
Your recovery will depend on your overall health and the type of surgery performed. Your surgeon will provide detailed instructions and let you know when it’ s safe to resume activities such as driving, exercising, or working. If your job isn’ t physically demanding, you may be able to go back within a few days.
