The Duquesne Incline:
A Historic Pittsburgh Landmark
T
BY NICOLE TAFE
The Duquesne Incline— one of the city’ s most treasured landmarks. Opened to the public on May 20, 1877, the incline was originally constructed to provide residents of Mount Washington with a reliable means of transportation. It follows the path of an early coal hoist, known as“ Kirk Lewis’ incline,” dating back to 1854.
Designed and built by engineer Samuel Diescher, the incline quickly became a key part of Pittsburgh’ s transportation system. At its peak, it was one of four inclines serving the summit of what was then called Coal Hill.
The Duquesne Incline remained in operation under the Duquesne Inclined Plane Company until 1962. Faced with its closing, a group of dedicated residents banded together to restore and reopen the incline in 1963, forming the Society for the Preservation of the Duquesne Heights Incline— a nonprofit that continues to operate it today.
With a track length of 794 feet, an elevation of 400 feet, and a grade of 30.5 degrees, the incline provides breathtaking views of downtown Pittsburgh. Visitors can step inside the upper station to watch the original machinery in motion and explore a museum showcasing Pittsburgh’ s rich history, along with exhibits on inclines from around the
world. The Duquesne Incline gift shop offers unique souvenirs, maps, and historical photographs for purchase.
The upper station, located at 1220 Grandview Avenue, is wheelchair accessible, ensuring that all visitors can enjoy this iconic piece of Pittsburgh history.
For those looking to experience more than just the view on the ride up to a Mt. Washington overlook, a walk along Grandview Avenue offers additional observation platforms, gardens and restaurants— making Mount Washington a must-visit destination.
While the incline remains a functional part of Pittsburgh’ s transportation system, it also serves as a symbol of the city’ s resilience and innovation. Whether you’ re a first-time visitor or a lifelong Pittsburgher, a ride on the Duquesne Incline is an unforgettable experience, offering a look into the past and the best view in town. n
