Norwin Middle School Students Discover“ WHAT’ S SO COOL ABOUT MANUFACTURING?”
Norwin Middle School Students EXPLORE THEIR FUTURES AT HEALTH CAREERS DAY

Nearly 41 Norwin Middle School students with an interest in health careers had the opportunity to interact with university students and health professionals in a special“ Health Careers Day.” Students participated in small-group discussions and hands-on activities with the following speakers:

• Mr. Shane Spielvogle, Executive Director of North Huntingdon EMS. He allowed the students to think through trauma situations and to explore medical items in a trauma bag.
• Ms. Maria Lanyi, Norwin graduate and current Pitt Medical Student. She allowed students to listen to heart and lung sounds and explained the difference between normal and abnormal findings.
• Ms. Kelly Faddish, Norwin graduate and registered nurse working in the Intensive Care Unit( ICU). She is training to be a Nurse Anesthetist in the University of Pittsburgh Nurse Anesthesia Program. She allowed students to use a Doppler ultrasound to listen to their heart rate as they would in the ICU.
• Ms. Alexis DeLeo, Norwin graduate and Pharmacist currently in a residency program at The West Penn Hospital Forbes Regional Campus. She taught the students the difference between prescription drugs and candy look-alikes. The goal of Health Careers Day was to expose students to these important interests early.

“ The hope is, allowing students to explore these very specific interests early on will foster a continued excitement for the medical field which will continue to grow throughout their high school years allowing them to prepare and stand out among their peers,” said Mrs. Jessica Rovesti, School Nurse.
Mrs. Rovesti and Mr. Rege Evanov, 7th Grade Language Arts Teacher, organized the event.
Mr. Evanov added,“ Once students have an interest in a field, it is important that they begin researching and exploring the field to find out if it is a true fit. We were trying to provide this exploratory experience.”

Norwin Middle School students created two videos as part of a regional contest that demonstrated the importance of manufacturing to nearly everyone, everywhere.
Through the“ What’ s So Cool About Manufacturing?” contest, the Norwin Middle School students toured the facilities of Parker Hannifin and PBM Valve-- both in North Huntingdon-- to create high-quality, documentary-style videos about their products and operations. The students worked with staff at Parker Hannifin and PBM Valve, prepared two marketing plans, and one of the videos was recognized for its entry about the impact of manufacturing.
The Parker Hannifin team won in the“ Bonus Video on Community Impact” category. Eighth-grader Lane Fischer led

this effort with a video demonstrating how employees of Parker Hannifin purchase bikes that are donated as holiday gifts to local children. The company dedicates an afternoon for the building of the bikes.
Twenty manufacturing companies across the Pittsburgh region were paired with 19 Pittsburgh-area middle schools who were encouraged to interview employees and go behind the scenes to learn about the manufacturing industry. Each team submitted its video to Catalyst Connection, the economic development organization that oversaw the contest. The contest yielded more than 46,000 votes over a five-day period. Norwin Middle School’ s two teams were overseen by teacher Mrs. Julie Painter.
