IN Norwin Summer 2017 | 页面 5

P reparations are underway at the Norwin Public Library for BUILD A BETTER WORLD, this year’s Children’s Summer Reading Program! Registration began May 22 and programming begins Thursday, June 15 and will wrap up on Thursday, July 27. “Once school is out, kids have the opportunity to really explore so many different types of books we have at the library, “stated Children’s Librarian Barbara Flynn. “They may continue an interest in non-fiction books, or want to read an entire series because they now have the time, or even share the books they love with a friend! I find that many kids will talk with their friends about books they enjoy and then the friends want to borrow the same titles. ” Flynn adds that there are a few easy ways that families can work together to help students avoid the “Summer Slide,” which is a regression in their learning over summer months, according to the Children’s Literacy Initiative. First off, have them read something each day! It can be a graphic novel, a magazine, a newspaper, or even listen to an eBook. Secondly, keep reading aloud to them. Set aside some time each day just to share a story or an article. And lastly, did you know reading just six books over the summer may help a struggling reader from experiencing the slide? With over seventeen thousand books in the Children’s Library, we are certain to have something to interest your young reader. If there’s something you’d like to see us add to our collection, please let us know. Summer slide -- it’s easily preventable. BUILD A BETTER WORLD programming includes a visit from a beekeeper (bees are great builders!) and plays from Stage Right, including the hilarious MONKEY WITH A TOOLBELT. We’ll have some Engineering Challenge programs presented by the Carnegie Science Center and we’ll learn about building healthier bodies with the Fit Kids Factory, along with many other fun activities! And we’ll also welcome back our favorite Star Wars friends when the 501st Garrison Carrida Unit visits in late July. Stop by and pick up a calendar of events and we hope to see you this summer, as we BUILD A BETTER WORLD! The Children’s Summer Reading Program is sponsored by the Friends of the Norwin Public Library. The Friends of the Norwin Public Library’s Annual “Buy the Bag” Used Book Sale takes place June 29th, 30th, and 31st. Purchase a brown bag for $5 and fill it with as many books as you can!
