Shining On: The Legacy and Resilience of the Norwin Theatre Company

Through challenges and triumphs, the NTC’ s dedication to excellence continues to inspire and elevate the arts at Norwin High School.
The Norwin Theatre Company( NTC) produces musicals each fall and spring, highlighting the amazing talent of Norwin High School students. Beloved by the community, these productions stand as a testament to the NTC’ s perseverance, proving that through good and bad, their dedication results in top-tier performances.
With nearly 32 years of theatre at Norwin, it is only fitting to celebrate those who overcome obstacles with every production they bring to life. The year 2020 was particularly challenging, especially for students who faced the cancellation of their spring musical, The Little Mermaid, just six days before opening night. Reflecting on the experience, Lauren Scheirer, music director and producer of the NTC, described it as“ devastating”— not just for those involved, but especially for the seniors who lost their final opportunity to perform. Fortunately, there was a light at the end of the tunnel and in 2021 when the students returned to school, their determination reignited, launching them into a rewarding journey to finally perform The Little Mermaid as originally envisioned. Countless hours of planning, combined with ever-changing guidelines, made the process difficult, but the NTC proved that nothing could stand in their way.
To make The Little Mermaid a reality, the NTC adapted in innovative ways. Scheirer explained,“ After much brainstorming and planning, we made the decision to take our show outside on the football field. To make the experience even more special we hired Zambelli Fireworks to conclude the performance in a spectacular display.” The NTC also provided a blow-up projector that gave the audience a closer and clearer look at what was happening on the field. Despite a few initial technical difficulties, the students’ dedication shone through, making the outdoor production a success.
Technical difficulties are nothing new to the NTC. Whether Mary Poppins is having trouble flying or a costume piece is malfunctioning, live theatre always presents its share of surprises. Fortunately, when issues arise, one person is always ready to step in— Mr. Todd Leighty. As the director of the stage crew and Norwin’ s skilled lighting and sound professional, Leighty has a“ sixth sense” for when something goes wrong. He also deeply appreciates the hard work of the students who operate behind the scenes. In the case of the Little Mermaid, Leighty noted,““[ He ] did not add any new stage crew members … to minimize the number of students working together … knowing that the ability to properly train them would be difficult …[ They ] did [ their ] best to work in small groups to limit interaction” and this limited number of participants made the entire process“ challenging”.
For Leighty, the most rewarding part of his job is watching students develop their skills and passions.“ In the end for me it is all about the students and their work. I take pride in the fact that our sets and props are built by our students, and the technical aspects( lighting, sound, video) are designed and run by the students. I have many students that have pursued careers and work professionally in live production around the country and knowing that I helped open the door to their future is the most rewarding part of the job”.

After years of success, the NTC has become one of the most celebrated organizations in the district— and its future is brighter than ever. A recently approved auditorium renovation will bring upgraded lighting, modern equipment, and cutting-edge technology, giving students hands-on experience with professional-grade tools. Improved safety equipment and the overall atmosphere will make for an improved and modern feel when in the audience of the new Performing Arts Center. While renovations are underway, the NTC’ s fall and spring productions will take place in the middle school auditorium, where their commitment to excellence will continue to shine.
A heartfelt“ thank you” is owed to Mr. Leighty and Ms. Lauren Scheirer for their unwavering support of Norwin’ s young artists and for fostering a culture of technical excellence and creativity. Behind every show are countless volunteers, costume designers, and choreographers who keep the wheels moving and fuel the passion for all students in the NTC. These are the faces behind the curtain and the driving force that keeps the NTC thriving.
With so much to celebrate and even more to look forward to, one thing remains clear— the Norwin Theatre Company is full of incredible people and the level of talent surpasses the ordinary. Beloved by all, the NTC continues to inspire, entertain, and elevate the arts. Long live the Norwin Theatre Company!
