Norwin Students Selected as 2024 District 12 Winner of the PennDOT Innovation Challenge
Last month , the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation ( PennDOT ) announced that a team of Norwin students were selected as the PennDOT District 12 winners for the seventh annual Innovations Challenge . Mentored by Mr . Thomas Harskowitch , Mathematics Curriculum Leader and Geometry / AP Statistics Instructor , the winning team included Troy Horvath and Noah Wilson . According to the PennDOT website , the Innovations Challenge is a statewide competition for high school students from around the Commonwealth to develop creative solutions and strategic
solutions to real-world transportation challenges . The Innovations Challenge allows students to explore the actual challenges PennDOT and the transportation industry face as well as consider the possibility of working in the industry later in life .
A total of five teams were selected from Norwin to participate in the district finals of the PennDOT Innovations Challenge earlier this year , competing against District 12 students from Westmoreland , Fayette , Washington , and Greene counties . According to the PennDOT website , the challenge this year was :
At the I-70 at I-76 Interchange ( New Stanton ) in Westmoreland County , truck parking is a known issue . Your challenge is to develop an innovative approach to increase commercial truck parking availability in that area and offset costs incurred for construction . Your solution must consider local ordinances and zoning laws for the area selected , commercial entity interaction in land development , community impact , restroom facilities , and space requirements for commercial trucks that are generally 70-80 feet long .
In addition to giving their presentations , students participated in activities run
by a Pennsylvania State Trooper dealing with teen driving safety and car maintenance . They also learned about recent PennDOT projects such as Diverging Diamond Interchanges and Roundabouts and the thought process behind those designs . Finally , the students got to take a tour of the Fayette county maintenance garage learning about products used for ice removal and the trucks and machinery used in the process .
The winning regional team ’ s innovation was to create community cohesion with a well-balanced dynamic environment . This will connect all citizens rather than creating separation . To achieve this , their plan is to create green zones and public spaces to enhance a sense of community , adjusting zoning regulations to cultivate a vibrant atmosphere , while enhancing multimodal connectivity with an emphasis on safety .
Regional winners will advance and have the opportunity to present their solutions to Secretary Carroll and panel of judges in Harrisburg in May , where a statewide winner will be selected . orwin
