Inaugural Norwin Invitational Quiz Tournament Draws 90 Student Competitors

Some 90 students from across the region competed at Norwin High

School’ s first Invitational Quiz Tournament on Saturday, February 4, 2017. This was an eight-round quiz tournament following the National Academic Quiz Teams( NAQT) style of quiz bowl. The format is similar to team Jeopardy, with a toss-up question followed by three bonus questions that only the team who answered the toss-up correctly may attempt. Each match was comprised of two teams and 20 toss-up questions were read.
A small group of Norwin High School students— Andrew Halza, Hunter
Andrew Halza Stecko, Jared Ackerman, Erin Crust, and Matt Bushik— had been independently competing in Saturday quiz tournaments in NAQT format, and were performing quite well. Andrew proposed the idea that Norwin host a tournament to generate additional local interest in the event. He then proceeded to plan, coordinate, and execute the entire tournament. Assisting Andrew in the coordination were Norwin High School students Hunter Stecko, Jared Ackerman, Erin Crust, Matt Bushik, Robert Blake, and ReidAnn Sever. Norwin teachers Kevin Chitester and Ciminy St. Clair also helped Andrew organize the event. Norwin teachers Lori Anselmino, Katherine Kauffman-Roth, Jennifer Boyd, Julie Painter, Eric Bartels, along with substitute teacher Leah Iwinski, also helped run the event, serving as moderators and score-keepers.
Other participating schools included Washington, Bishop Canevin, Westmont Hilltop, Penn- Trafford, Winchester Thurston, Taylor Allderdice, Shady Side Academy, Penn Hills, Baldwin, and Franklin Regional.
Mr. Halza hopes that the tournament will continue even after he is no longer here to plan it. Results are posted on NAQT’ s website, and well-performing teams have an opportunity to attend the national tournament.
