special events. On Sunday, August 3, the Norwin Ministerium will
host an all-denominational community church service. On Tuesday,
August 5, the IBPA will sponsor Dancin’ in the Streets and a Shop
Crawl, featuring a live band. The following day, the Norwin Chamber
of Commerce is hosting a Norwin Community Picnic. Thursday,
August 7, is the Antique Super Cruise, and on Friday, August 8, the
Norwin Christian Church will host a Gala Anniversary Dinner.
The festivities will conclude on August 9 with a two-hour parade, as
well as a concert in the park and fireworks.
The celebration committee is also publishing a hardback coffee
table book to commemorate the borough’s anniversary. The book
will be available in late spring and will cost $25. Anyone interested in
ordering a copy of the book should contact the Irwin Borough office
at 724.864.3100.
“The committee is working hard to bring together a valuable piece
of history,” says Kelly.
The anniversary committee currently has about 21 active members
who have been preparing for the celebration for more than a year and
a half. Although most of the planning has been completed, Kelly says
the group still needs help with operations for what they are calling
‘The Big Parade” in August. They also need more church groups to
participate in the Ethnic Food Festival. Anyone who is interested in
helping should contact Kelly through the Irwin Borough office.
“I am very proud to be part of a community that is still going strong.
In my mind, it’s the all-volunteer organization, the IBPA, which has
worked the hardest to keep us vibrant. The town has come a long
way in the past 5-8 years. I believe there is only one open storefront
available. There’s something to be said about that,” notes Kelly. ■
