Empowering Future Technology Workers: Norwin School District’ s Summer IT Internship Program
The Norwin School District’ s Summer Information Technology Internship offers college students a dynamic, handson experience across multiple disciplines in the IT field. Spanning the summer months, this immersive program blends practical fieldwork with structured classroom instruction, preparing interns for real-world technology challenges and careers.
Interns begin by engaging directly with the district’ s technology infrastructure. Tasks include setting up and decommissioning iPads using a mobile device manager, running Ethernet data cabling, and configuring both Mac and Windows computer labs. They also assist in preparing classroom technology, such as installing Apple TVs and managing associated cabling. Continuing the hands on experience, interns work in data closets to organize patch panels and switch ports into the proper VLANs, gaining valuable exposure to enterprise-level networking environments.
The program’ s academic component is equally robust. Interns participate in 11 weeks of classroom instruction, over 30 hours of whiteboard and Q & A interaction, culminating in a capstone project where they design a complete network infrastructure. This includes planning the network cable plant, access control, surveillance cameras, PCs, virtual server infrastructure, and wireless access points. The last task builds
the budget for the entire configuration.
The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including SQL Server database management, networking fundamentals, data cabling standards, and cybersecurity framework. Interns also explore advanced cyber tools such as Endpoint Detection and Response( EDR) and Extended Detection and Response( XDR), as well as virtualization technologies, firewall configurations, and ethernet packet analysis.
By combining technical training with real-world application, the Norwin School District’ s IT internship equips students with the skills, confidence, and experience needed to pursue careers in technology. It’ s a transformative opportunity for aspiring IT professionals to learn, build, and lead in a supportive and forward-thinking environment.
Chad Lucas, Director of Technology, highlights the program’ s value for college students:“ This program is perfectly positioned for the college student between their sophomore and junior years. We provide the tools and resources for college students to direct their education and next internship into the discipline that interests them. This will better prepare them for their career. We cover multiple disciplines in the field that they simply won’ t get anywhere else.”
He adds,“ Norwin is the place for information technology and cybersecurity interns to learn the technology behind the theory. We have them put our classroom material into practice.” orwin
