82 Norwin High School Students Earn AP Honors
The College Board has honored 82 Norwin students with AP Scholar Awards for the 2023-2024 school year . This includes 39 AP Scholars , 18 AP Scholars with Honor , and 25 AP Scholars with Distinction . These awards recognize students for their outstanding performance in college-level Advanced Placement courses , which offer the opportunity to earn college credit and advanced placement while still in high school .
“ AP is widely recognized as one of the most rigorous high school programs in the nation ,” said Dr . Natalie McCracken , superintendent of the Norwin School District . “ I ’ m incredibly proud of our students for their outstanding achievements , as well as their dedication and perseverance in completing this challenging academic coursework .”
AP Scholars with Distinction are students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams they take , as well as scores of 3 or higher on five or more exams . Students recognized at this level included Tyler Andrews , Arnav Bedekar , Anna Beresnyak , Aaron Berger , Dmitri Berger , Andrew Brown , Audra Fedor , Kayden Field , Thomas Gaydos , Ethan Hall , Cole Kubistek , Kathryn Metzger , Noah Mulac , Matthew Nelson , Simone Pal , Ashley Petranka , Emma Reese , Seth Sheffler , David Shepherd , Heather Smarick , Alexander Taleff , Paige Tokay , Julia Walko , Rex Wu , and Abigail Zula .
AP Scholars with Honor are students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams they take , along with scores of 3 or higher on four or more . Students earning this honor included Addison Baer , Joshua Bazala , Adyn Brown , Lukas Dimitroff , Hayden Douglas , Grace Fleckenstein , Nikolas Kelly , Olivia Lane , Sara Mamas , Anna Morrow , Henry Peters , Megan Potthoff , Sydney Reiter , Charlee Rice , Laura Royce , Abigail Szymanski , Isabella Ulery , and Jacqueline Weber .

BUSPATROL SAFETY PROGRAM
As part of ongoing safety initiatives , the Norwin School District has partnered with the North Huntingdon Township Police and BusPatrol to tackle the illegal passing of stopped school buses . Beginning in October the entire fleet of Norwin buses will be outfitted with automated enforcement technology to detect the license plates of vehicles that fail to stop for school buses , putting children at risk . The video evidence is shared with local law enforcement for review before a citation is issued .
Last fall , Pennsylvania authorities reported more than 250 stoparm violations in one day during Operation Safe Stop . In 2020 , Allentown School District captured over 200 illegal passings on just two school buses over a 47-day stop-arm study . This is equal to 2.18 violations per bus per day .
PENNSYLVANIA ’ S SCHOOL BUS STOPPING LAW n When you meet or overtake a stopped school bus with red signal lights flashing and stop arm activated , you MUST STOP . n When approaching a school bus with flashing amber lights , SLOW DOWN and be PREPARED TO STOP . n When you approach an intersection where a school bus is stopped with red signal lights flashing and stop arm activated , you MUST STOP . n You MUST STOP at least ten ( 10 ) feet away from the school bus . n You MUST WAIT until the red lights have stopped flashing and the stop arm has been withdrawn before moving . n DO NOT MOVE until all the children have reached a place of safety .
In addition to stop-arm cameras , Norwin will equip its buses with safety features at no cost to the district or taxpayers . The technology , installation , and maintenance are funded by violation revenue over a 5-year term .
THE PENALTIES FOR VIOLATING PENNSYLVANIA ’ S SCHOOL BUS STOPPING LAWS ARE AS FOLLOWS : n Criminal Penalties — Penalties listed below apply for citations issued by law enforcement for passing a school bus with red lights flashing and a stop arm activated . n 60-day Driver ’ s License Suspension , Five ( 5 ) points on your driving record , and a $ 250 Fine . n Civil Penalties — The Penalty listed below applies when you are issued a violation for passing a school bus equipped with an automated side stop signal arm enforcement system . n The penalty for a first-time violation is $ 300 . No effect to your driving record ( no suspension and no points )
Following the official roll-out of the program , there will be a 30-day warning period through November 14 , providing the opportunity for warnings to be given in lieu of a penalty . Law enforcement does reserve the right to issue penalties for any flagrant , serious , and / or egregious violations during the warning period .
