PTA ORGANIZATIONS Provide Outdoor Play Spaces for Elementary Students N orwin School District students at two elementary schools are running and jumping with joy at recess and during physical education classes thanks to generous donations from two Parent- Teacher Associations. The Hahntown PTA donated $25,000 to the School District to purchase and install a 30’ x 62’ Basketball Court / Multi-Purpose Court. The Sheridan Terrace PTA donated $12,000 to the School District to install an outdoor asphalt basketball court. The project consisted of a 42’ x 37’ half-court asphalt surface and basketball hoop. Students at both schools were able to enjoy the new courts during the 2018-2019 school year and will continue to do so for years to come. “Thanks to the Hahntown PTA, boys and girls can play volleyball, 4 Square, hopscotch, basketball and even kickball using this addition,” said Mrs. Lisa Willig, Principal of Hahntown Elementary School. “The best part of the Sports Court is how quickly the top dries, so the children can always use it.” Sheridan Terrace students love the new basketball court that the PTA provided last spring, according to Dr. Heather Newell, Principal of Sheridan Terrace Elementary School. “It gives the boys and girls another dry surface to play on during recess,” Dr. Newell said. “Thank you to the members of the Sheridan Terrace PTA. Your support made the purchase of this new court possible!” Hahntown Elementary School’s new Sport Court provided by the school’s PTA. The Norwin College in the High School Program allows students to earn college credits and a transcript from participating colleges and universities such as the University of Pittsburgh, Seton Hill University, or Rochester Institute of Technology. A major advantage of the College in the High School program is that most courses have a minimal tuition fee, which is payable to the respective university. Here are just a few examples of courses from among many that are offered at Norwin through these universities: Rochester Institute of Technology: Introduction to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, and Computer Integrated Manufacturing n Seton Hill University: Calculus with Analytical Geometry, Calculus 2 & 3, Principles of Accounting, and Introduction to American History I. n University of Pittsburgh: Intermediate French I & II, Intermediate German I & 2, Basic Applied Statistics, and Introduction to Information Science and Cybersecurity. n As an example of the success of this program, the German College in High School classes graduated 15 students in May 2019. Students were able to earn up to six credits (three credits per year) from the University of Pittsburgh for participating in German 4 and German 5. (See photo.)
