STAGE RIGHT’ S SUMMER CAMP STAGES‘ SWEENEY TODD’ AND‘ DISNEY’ S THE LION KING, JR.’
Stage Right’ s second summer camp started on July 9 and welcomed 100 students to its studios in downtown Greensburg. Thirty preteens and 70 teens took part in the performance camp, which features classes in acting, dance and voice in the mornings, and then rehearsal for each age group’ s respective production.
Stage Right’ s summer camp staff includes Tony Marino( AEA, SDC, DGA), Renata Marino( AEA, Point Park, Musical Theatre) Nick Lenz( Shenandoah University, Musical Theatre), Rylan Jenkins Snaith( SUNY Fredonia, Acting), Christopher McAllister( IUP, Music Education), and musical intern Jake Fry( Duquesne University, Music Education). In addition to the main staff, the kids are treated to Master classes from other professional artists.
Alex Noble( AEA, Point Park, Musical Theatre) gave the kids a lesson in fight choreography and stage combat, CMU’ s Claudia Benack taught a voice workshop and told kids about what it takes to get into the best theater university in the country, local actor and teaching artist Daina Griffith( AEA, Point Park, Acting) taught a monologue performance class as well as provided insight on what it takes to be a working actor, and Lena Gabrielle( composer of“ Tink!”) talked to the students about her life as a musical director in NYC.
Preteens, under the direction of Nick, Rylan and Jake, performed“ Disney’ s Lion King, Jr.”
The show has captivated the imagination of audiences around the world and now has been adapted for young actors. The African savannah comes to life on stage with Simba, Rafiki and an unforgettable cast of characters as they journey from Pride Rock to the jungle and back again, in this inspiring, coming-of-age tale.
Teens, under the direction of Tony, Renata and Chris, staged“ Sweeney Todd.”
Stephen Sondheim’ s and Hugh Wheeler’ s(“ A Little Night Music,”“ Pacific Overtures”) tasty, thrilling, theatrical treat has simultaneously shocked, awed and delighted audiences across the world, spinning the infamous tale of Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber who returns to London seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife.
Artistic Director Tony Marino said,“ This is a big camp, and the energy and camaraderie of this group is incredibly fun and infectious, plus they’ re hungry to work every day. We’ re doing spoken word pieces in the acting classes, some really contemporary stuff in dance class and very complex things in the voice classes, plus the shows themselves are hard! But, every day, every kid is‘ in it to win it’— a really impressive group that covers every local school district as well as places as far away as Connemaugh and Shanksville, plus a kid from Virginia and one from New Jersey. They all work hard, and have formed instant friendships. At lunch, nearly all the teens eat together while some break out instruments and have sing alongs. Both camps this year have had a tremendously good vibe.”
The three-week camp culminated with a weekend of performances July 27-29 at the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center.“ Disney’ s The Lion King, Jr.” roared onto the stage Friday and Saturday while“ Sweeney Todd,” which featured four different sets of lead characters, held several performances Friday through Sunday.
