According to Mr. Walt Lehman, Director of Facilities and
Property Services for Norwin School District, the following projects began this summer
and are scheduled to be substantially completed before students return for the 20162017 school year.
n New Gym Lighting at Norwin High School: New LED lighting is being installed in
the Norwin High School gymnasium and auxiliary gymnasium for increased illumination
and energy efficiency. Westmoreland Electric of Tarrs, PA, provided the lighting upgrade
for $136,000. The two gyms and mezzanine previously had metal halide/mercury
vapor lights, which were once state-of-the-art during the 1980s, but which have been
surpassed by newer LED technology. The LED lights will increase the lighting levels, allow
for more flexibility in lighting levels for different events, and reduce energy cost from
$5,000 per year to an estimated $200 per year.
n Partial Roof Replacement at Norwin High School: This was needed because
certain areas of the Norwin High School roof developed leaks and tears soon after its
original installation in the early 2000s. The School District has pursued, and will continue
to pursue, all repairs afforded the District for the remaining roof area covered by the
original warranty. The District has opted, under the advice of Florida Consulting, to
pursue a partial roof replacement at a cost of approximately $1 million to safeguard the
gym floor and academic areas and other areas throughout the building. Stringert Inc., of
McKees Rocks, began the roof replacement work on June 1 and is scheduled to have the
project substantially completed by August 19, 2016.
n New Stage Curtains for Norwin High School Auditorium: These are scheduled
to be installed this summer by the Janson Industries of Canton, Ohio, for $26,290. The
previous curtains dated from the 1990s and had begun to show signs of dry rotting and
normal wear and tear.
n Replacement of Gymnasium Bleachers at Sunset Valley Elementary School:
The previous bleacher seats were cracking and had become a safety concern. New
bleachers seats were ordered. The new bleachers were provided by C.M. Eichenlaub Co.,
of Pittsburgh, for $5,394, and will be installed by the Norwin Maintenance Department in
August or early September.
n Gymnasium Floor Refinishing at Hillcrest Intermediate School: Because of
excessive wear, previous water damage on the floor, and an increase in usage, the
District has contracted with the Ohio Floor Company of Holmesville, Ohio, to sand,
repaint existing lines, add a center logo, and refinish the gymnasium floor at Hillcrest
Intermediate School.
