WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR CHILD’S
EDUCATION, ‘HOW’ MATTERS
s parents, we want to give our children every opportunity
to succeed – in college, career and life. But how?
Across four campuses, Shady Side Academy offers a
thoughtful, intentional and proven approach to education.
The educational experience features a rigorous academic curriculum
balanced by exceptional arts and athletics opportunities, technology
and facilities that support learning and growth, and expert faculty
members—73 percent of whom hold advanced degrees.
“How” Shapes Who They Become
Shady Side’s signature programs propel students’ intellectual
development in every division and in every discipline.
• Writing: Elementary students complete a Writing Workshop
curriculum while Middle Schoolers engage with faculty in
one-on-one Writing Lab sessions. Senior School students draft
analytical writing projects in every discipline.
• Math and Problem Solving: Young students build a strong
foundation of math concepts through the Singapore Math
curriculum. Older students may take accelerated courses and
advanced electives in the Middle and Senior schools.
• Science: SSA students explore science in state-of-the-art
facilities, including a new treehouse classroom at Country Day
School and the McIlroy Center for Science and Innovation at the
Senior School.
• Service Learning: Middle School students organize and lead
Global Action Day each year, while Senior School students
participate in Parkin Fellowships, receiving grant money to
complete service or environmental projects around the globe.
• Arts: An instrumental music program begins in SSA’s elementary
schools, and Middle School students perform in six music
ensembles and two drama productions annually. The Senior
School campus boasts professional-caliber performing and
visual arts centers.
• Athletics: Seventeen Middle School athletic teams prepare
students for success in the Senior School, where SSA has claimed
61 league titles and 15 state championships in 17 sports.
Throughout their
academic careers,
Shady Side students
encounter remarkable
opportunities to explore
their passions, build
confidence and prepare
for success at the next
level. In fact, among
recent graduates, 21
percent participated
in an international or
off-campus program; 33
percent completed an
independent study or senior project; 42 percent participated in the
performing arts; and 82 percent lettered in at least one varsity sport.
Three full-time college counselors work one-on-one with students
to identify the college that best matches their talents and career
aspirations.
“How” Guides What They Do
Shady Side teachers create active learning environments and instill
effective collaboration skills in their students. As a result, SSA alumni
are strong leaders who solve problems, adapt to change, motivate
others and make a positive impact on the world.
