NORTH ALLEGHENY DONATES
FURNITURE TO FLOODED WEST
VIRGINIA SCHOOLS
On July 27, the North Allegheny School District (NASD) donated
more than 3,200 used desks, chairs, tables and other school furniture
to the Kanawha County School District, which had several schools
facing severe damage following the flooding in West Virginia in June.
Kanawha County School District’s problem was brought to North
Allegheny’s attention by Sandy Stein, a retired teacher from NA
Intermediate High School, who witnessed the devastation firsthand
as a Red Cross volunteer. Four schools in Kanawha County were
hit particularly hard by the flooding, and struggled to clean up the
muddy, water-logged classrooms and replace destroyed furniture
and supplies before this school year. After Stein contacted North
Allegheny administrators to ask how the district could help the flood
victims, the group decided to donate the furniture left over from
recent building renovations.
Bradford Woods and Marshall elementary and Marshall middle
schools were undergoing renovations and replacing the furniture that
is more than 25 years old. Typically, when furniture is replaced after a
few decades of use, the district sells or disposes of it, hoping to break
even on the costs associated with transporting and disposal.
By donating the old furniture to Kanawha County School District
and having volunteers pick it up at the school buildings, North
Allegheny saved those costs.
“Our hearts immediately went out to the Kanawha County Schools,
who had been doing everything they could to get their buildings back
in shape before the start of the school year,” says North Allegheny
Superintendent Dr. Robert Scherrer. “It was a fortunate coincidence
