Trusting Your Health to the Best

When it comes to dermatology, Dr. Damon McClain’ s approach has always been one of compassionate professionalism. From medical and surgical dermatology to cosmetic services, each of the physicians in his practice are board certified, adhering to the American Academy of Dermatology’ s strict guidelines regarding transparency to the patient.

After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh and receiving his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine, Dr. McClain started his career as a physician at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center with the U. S. Navy, where he was an officer for 12 years. Afterward, he came back to Pittsburgh to pursue a civilian career in dermatology and has taken over the practice of retiring dermatologist, and lifelong friend, Dr. Ira Cohen.
“ We dedicate ourselves to continuing his philosophy of being family centered, not rushing patients through the exam rooms, and caring for patients as people, not numbers,” Dr. McClain said.“ So you can expect short wait times, patient-centered care and a personal experience. We don’ t overbook so that we can spend the time necessary with each patient, from the beginning of the exam to the last answered question, and we also have sameday emergency appointments.”
Dr. McClain’ s emphasis on up-to-date, cutting-edge technology means that not only does the practice have digitized medical records, it also has XTRAC light-based therapy for psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, vitiligo and cutaneous T cell lymphoma. The practice also utilizes dermoscopy— the new method of detecting skin cancer that was prominently featured on KDKA News this past fall. The handheld device allows dermatologists to better determine whether skin lesions are benign or malignant, helping them see important features that the unaided eye would miss and allowing for earlier detection of skin cancers.
Dr. McClain works alongside his wife, Susannah McClain, M. D., who also graduated from Temple University School of Medicine. Both are board-certified dermatologists and have taught at various medical programs in their careers. The two work independently, but also consult as a team for patients who have complicated skin issues. The McClains have also retained longtime physician assistant Molly McIntyre, who Dr. Cohen’ s patients will readily recognize.
As for services offered, Three Rivers Dermatology welcomes patients of all ages for medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatological treatments— everything from the aforementioned psoriasis to skin cancer, as well as Botox / Xeomin treatments for wrinkles and chemical peels, all while fully explaining the intricacies of those procedures to patients every step of the way to ensure their complete comfort and satisfaction. And as a retired Naval officer, Dr. McClain welcomes fellow military and veteran patients with open arms.
And regardless of whether you consult with Three Rivers Dermatology, Dr. McClain notes that everyone should be using an SPF 30 or greater sunscreen earlier in life, as well as sunprotective clothing for children.
“ Every tan is considered to be damage to your DNA, so not tanning or burning helps keep your skin healthier,” Dr. McClain said. It also helps prevent skin cancer and the formation of wrinkles as you age, so people end up looking younger later in life.
