With a father who was into bodybuilding, some of Kilhof’s earliest memories are of going to the gym with his dad and learning to stay healthy. And while he started his adult career writing computer code for industrial machinery, the call of the gym and those memories of youth pulled him back toward fitness. “I didn’t see myself writing code for the rest of my life,” he said. “It wasn’t my thing, so I got my master’s and worked in Germany as a personal trainer. When I came to the United States, I had to redo my certifications here to comply with U.S. regulations. Now, I have my own business.” And, if you’re looking to get in shape safely, Iron Shark Training is your best bet. Kilhof’s approach and philosophy toward training is “Safety first.” Because he stresses learning the basics instead of diving right into difficult regimens, his clients range from young children to senior citizens and everyone in between. As a Certified Personal Trainer and Strength Specialist with a Master of Exercise Science degree, Kilhof not only knows how to train, but understands the science behind it as well. “My clients are people who want to get in shape. They could be advanced or just coming back to fitness after months or years away from the gym,” he said. “I used to train people with disabilities, so I’ve always paid attention to proper form and postures before getting people into more strenuous exercise. People need a foundation first if they are going to achieve success and avoid discouragement.” While Kilhof has trained clients in both German and U.S. markets, the differences in the two countries are minor. “The commitment levels are the same: if you want to work out, you work out,” he explained. “In Germany, I trained a lot of athletes—hockey players and runners— who wanted to improve endurance. Here, there’s a much bigger crowd with varied fitness goals. I train in a gym that Steelers work out in, and everyday people work out in, and they both want to get better.” With names like “German Strength Training,” “Primal Workout 1 on 1,” and “Valhalla Workout 1 on 1,” Kilhof’s programs may look intimidating at first, but he’s confident that the majority of his clients can reach the levels needed to complete each of them. “When people believe in themselves and see real results, there is nothing they can’t do,” he said. With Iron Shark Training, Kilhof offers clients a free consultation where they can review their problems, health issues and set goals.
