Heart of Family Law
For more than 20 years , Attorney Dawn K . Gull has been practicing the ins and outs of every aspect of family law . Last year , she opened her own practice in Wexford , where she has raised her family , to be closer to the clients who need her services .
Gull , who predominantly sees clients seeking a divorce , custody , support or division of property , said that her initial focus is being the voice of pragmatism for people during this emotionally charged time .
“ Anytime a family goes through a divorce and separation , people feel that it ’ s the worst thing to ever happen in their lives ,” Gull said . “ My job is to help them navigate it as efficiently and painlessly as possible from a legal perspective .”
In fact , every aspect of divorce can be tinged with bitter emotions , from the equitable distribution of assets to custody issues to child and spousal support . From families with simple assets to divide , to families who have complicated financial assets with businesses to value and a multitude of equities , Dawn Gull has represented them all in facilitating a resolution that ’ s fair and equitable to her clients .
Gull ’ s ability to see through the marital “ fog of war ” to find the common ground where a peace can be found is a talent that she ’ s honed through years of experience and litigation . In fact , she originally went to school to study Constitutional law , but discovered family law and found that she had a natural way with people going through trying times . Today , she ’ s not only a successful family law attorney , she ’ s also Chair of the Allegheny
County Bar Association ’ s Family Law Section , the Chair of the ACBA Professional Ethics Committee , and does numerous charitable and pro bono cases to give back to the community as a whole . In North Allegheny , she served on the school district ’ s 2007-13 Strategic Planning Committee .
Gull also prides herself on being upfront with clients , advising them that finding a lawyer with whom they are comfortable is essential .
“ You can have the best lawyer in the world , but if you don ’ t click with them or trust them completely , you are not going to get the best result . You ’ re going to be taking someone ’ s word on a lot of things that will be directly impacting your life ,” she explains . “ Having a rapport with my clients is so very vital that if I ’ m not that person for them , I tell them to keep looking .”
Representing men and women from all walks of life , Gull feels that the key to successfully navigating a divorce is in understanding the client as well as the opposing side and reconciling those two viewpoints .
“ I really try to do a good job of cost-benefit analysis for my clients . A lawyer who only tells you what you want to hear doesn ’ t do anybody any good ,” she said . “ I know I ’ m giving my clients the right lay of the land , and , together , we develop a strategy to pursue their goals .”
