in the LOOP What’s news in North Allegheny CARDINAL WUERL NORTH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL PREPARES THE FUTURE WORKFORCE During the fall of 2015, with a generous grant from the Heinz Endowments, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School (CWNC) created a Career Development Program. Under the guidance of Jennifer Parsons, Program Manager, CWNC began several initiatives aimed at increasing career exploration and self-awareness for the entire high school, beginning in 9th grade. “This program has the potential to support and advance industry and economic development in the greater Pittsburgh area for years to come,” says Luke Crawford, principal of CWNC. “We are excited to be at the forefront of this initiative. As part of our mission as a Catholic school, we are proud to offer these opportunities to a wide range of students from diverse backgrounds and various academic levels.” In order to help with career research and growth, students will be expected to create a Career Action Plan that will be monitored throughout their entire high school experience. These plans will be used to aid students in the following areas: determining what starting salaries are, what majors are suitable for their career interest, researching school cost of attendance, attending miniworkshops, learning self-awareness and etiquette skills, drafting resumes and cover letters and taking part in job shadowing opportunities as well as a mock interview. The program also aims to connect with local companies and employers to create a vast network of resources available to all students at CWNC.
