NORTH ALLEGHENY FOUNDATION AWARDS RECORD- BREAKING AMOUNT IN SCHOLARSHIPS
The North Allegheny Foundation awarded more than $ 100,000 in its Spring 2025 Grant Cycle, setting a record for classroom grant funding across the district.
The grants supported a wide variety of projects, including $ 14,500 for the“ Beyond the Sky Inflatable Planetarium”( district-wide), $ 36,765 for the“ Wave of Innovation” program featuring the OMAX ProtoMAX Waterjet Machining Center at NAI, and $ 9,400 for an“ Art Maker Space” at NASH.
Other funded initiatives ranged from adapted bikes, coding and 3D printing, and classroom libraries to music, athletics and global business programs. The foundation credits the achievement to strong community support.
NA GRAD SCORING BIG IN NATIONAL WOMEN’ S SOCCER LEAGUE
North Allegheny graduate and former Pitt standout Sarah Schupansky is making an impressive impact in her rookie season with Gotham FC of the National Women’ s Soccer League.
After signing a two-year contract in late 2024, the 21-year-old forward quickly earned a spot in the starting lineup, scoring her first professional goal in a win over the Washington Spirit and contributing to Gotham’ s 2024-25 CONCACAF W Champions Cup title.
Schupansky has also trained with the U. S. Women’ s National Team, traveled to Europe for friendlies, and helped Gotham qualify for the inaugural 2028 FIFA Women’ s Club World Cup.
THE BLOCK NORTHWAY HOSTS KIDS SAFETY EVENT, PLUS WEEKLY FARMERS MARKET
The Block Northway held its seventh annual Kids Safety Event on June 19.
NA GRAD MICHAEL KOMARA HELPS TEAM USA EARN BRONZE AT WORLD FLY FISHING CHAMPIONSHIP
Michael Komara, a North Allegheny High School graduate and Penn State alum, recently helped Team USA earn a bronze medal at the FIPS-Mouche World Fly Fishing Championship. Competing against teams from 22 countries, Komara ranked 25th individually out of 110 anglers, contributing to the team’ s impressive third-place finish.
A passionate fisherman since childhood— thanks to his grandfather’ s early influence— Komara began competitive fly fishing at 17 and now balances his career in data analytics with his love for the sport. Based in Colorado, he continues to train and compete, crediting fly fishing with teaching him focus, patience and problem-solving. With international success now under his belt, Komara hopes to keep representing the U. S. on the world stage.
Children explored fire trucks, EMS and Ross Township Police vehicles, and safety equipment. Information was provided by a variety of organizations, and attendees also enjoyed face painting, balloon art, Paint Monkey, a visit with K-9 Pluto of the Allegheny County Fire Marshal’ s office, a chance to win amazing prizes, and the popular Kiddie Kaboose.
Participating organizations included the Ross Township Police Department, Allegheny County Fire Marshal, Allegheny County Sheriff’ s Office, Be Smart, Berkeley Hills VFC, Every Child, Inc., Perrysville VFC, Ross / West View EMS, Passavant Hospital Foundation, Crisis Center North, AHN Pediatrics, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Girl Scouts of Western PA, Holy Cross Academy, Key Bank, and AHN West Penn Burn Center.
The Block Northway also hosts a weekly farmers market, produced in partnership with I Made It Market. Each day has a diverse collection of local vendors offering locally grown produce, fine spirits, flowers, unique handmade gifts, food trucks and more. Adults and kids alike can enjoy shopping at this festive weekly event.
Every Thursday through September, guests visiting the marketplace can expect to find small business vendors offering locally grown farm-fresh goods, fresh cheeses, canned goods, local eggs, flowers, honey and other goodies.
The farmers market is sponsored by Jim Shorkey Mitsubishi, SSB Bank, Highmark, AHN and Key Bank.
