was among approximately 3,500 winners of College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarships announced by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation( NMSC) on June 6. An additional 500 collegesponsored scholars were announced on July 16. In addition, approximately 1,000 Corporate-Sponsored National Merit Scholarships were announced on April 18 and 2,500 National Merit $ 2,500 Scholarships were announced on May 9. In all, about 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $ 31 million are being awarded in 2018.
Kim joins classmate Robby Sveda, who won a National Merit $ 2,500 Scholarship in May. Kim and Sveda were among seven National Merit Finalists in SSA’ s Class of 2018.

STUDENT-WRITTEN PLAYS SELECTED IN CITY THEATRE’ S ANNUAL EQT YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS CONTEST
City Theatre Director of Education & Accessibility Kristen Link announced the finalists in the annual EQT Young Playwrights Contest. The six finalists, all middle and high school students from western Pennsylvania, will receive a professional production of their original one-act plays during the EQT Young Playwrights Festival, running October 16- 27, in the Lester Hamburg Studio at City Theatre. Four honorable-mention plays were also chosen and will receive a staged reading during the festival.
“ We were truly impressed by both the quality and quantity of plays we received in the contest this spring,” says Link.“ All of the student writers should be commended for their bravery and imagination. I cannot wait to challenge and entertain Pittsburgh audiences with the exciting plays they’ ve created.”
The EQT Young Playwrights Contest and Festival is a cornerstone of City Theatre’ s education initiatives, introducing students to the new play process and celebrating the creative and vibrant young voices of our region. This year, City Theatre received nearly 400 original one-act submissions from classrooms and individuals, which were considered by a literary panel of 45 readers nationwide. Each finalist has been working alongside a professional dramaturg to revise and develop their scripts for production.
North Allegheny’ s Maeren Quirke of Ingomar Middle School is a Middle School Finalist for her piece titled“ Esperanza Means Hope.”
Ellen Poplavska of North Allegheny Senior High School received an honorable mention for her piece titled“ Christmas, Somewhere.”
The EQT Young Playwrights Festival will include two weeks of student matinees, public performances October 20-21, and a reading of honorable mentions on October 27. SPECIAL FARMERS MARKET / HARVEST FESTIVAL AT THE BLOCK NORTHWAY
The Block Northway will host a yearend autumn farmers market to showcase the bounty of fall produce, along with a Harvest Festival featuring free fun activities for the entire family!
The fun begins on Friday, Oct. 26, from 3 to 7 p. m., at the new two-level south atrium located near DSW and Wahlburgers. Guests will enjoy locally grown farm-fresh goods sold by diverse vendors like Freedom Farms, The Olive Tap, Wigle Whiskey, Jarred, GOODLife Juices, Aunt Carol’ s Homemade Dips, Gahr’ s Hamloaf, Zeke’ s Coffee, Kettle Corn and many more. Activities include free face painting, balloon artist, Carnegie Science Center liquid nitrogen ice cream, pumpkin patch, glow sticks, appearance by Witch Hazel, and Harvest Brew Tasting by Pittsburgh Brewing.
Costumes are encouraged, and giveaways are on a first-come, first-served basis. n
