As someone with osteoarthritis , Marie Bacon was no stranger to joint pain . But when the pain in her hips became unbearable , she knew something had to be done . “ I was having trouble walking ,” she said . “ I couldn ’ t do the simple things you take for granted anymore . Like bending over , or climbing up a stepladder to my bird feeder . It would take me forever to get in the car . The pain was making work difficult , too . As a lunch aide , I was on my feet a lot . I couldn ’ t bring a cane into the cafeteria , so I was using garbage cans as walkers ,” she said .
She made an appointment with Brian Moore , MD , the AHN Orthopaedic Surgeon who had performed her same-day knee replacement at the AHN Monroeville Surgery Center in June 2022 . Dr . Moore did an X-ray and they decided a hip replacement was her best option . “ I thought , here we go again ,” Marie said . “ But the knee replacement had gone well and I knew I didn ’ t have a choice .” To prepare for surgery , she did leg lifts and stretches to strengthen the muscles around her hip and help promote a speedy recovery . On the day of surgery , she went to the AHN Monroeville Surgery Center knowing she was in good shape and good hands .
“ Everyone was professional , but I was most impressed with how kind and caring they were . I felt I was a priority . I was well taken care of ,” she said . “ The fact that they could do it all right there and I could be home that same day was wonderful .”
Recovery went as well as her surgery did . “ There was some pain , but it wasn ’ t bad . More annoying than anything else ,” Marie said . After a few weeks of in-home therapy with an AHN Physical Therapist , followed by two months of exercising on her own , she was cleared to go back to work . Now she ’ s back to filling her bird feeders , and all the other things she loves doing . “ If you ’ re going through this , don ’ t put it off and don ’ t be afraid ,” she said . “ Just know you won ’ t be in pain any more .”
