CHILDREN AND COLLABORATION
Learning how to collaborate is crucial for children as it cultivates a range of skills and attributes that are essential for personal , academic , and future professional success . Collaboration fosters effective communication and interpersonal skills , enabling children to express their thoughts and ideas clearly while respecting and understanding the perspectives of others . It instills teamwork and cooperation , teaching children to work harmoniously towards common goals , share responsibilities , and navigate group dynamics . Collaborative experiences enhance problem-solving abilities as children learn to approach challenges collectively , pooling diverse insights and creativity to find innovative solutions . Collaboration fosters empathy and social awareness , helping children develop a sense of community and an understanding of the value of diversity . In a world where collaboration is increasingly fundamental to success , whether in the academic arena or the workplace , or society at large , cultivating these collaborative skills from a young age empowers children to thrive in an interconnected and interdependent global environment .
Fifth-grade teachers Mrs . Allison Smith and Dr . Brienne May ( along with other teachers at FR Intermediate and Primary Schools ) teamed across buildings to design an opportunity for intermediate and primary students to work together . Teams then collaborated to construct a 3-D robot-powered “ parade float ” of their selected animal / plant . Floats were on display during a holiday float parade in November .

Students are broken into collaborative teams comprised of a mixture of students across different homerooms . They rotate through stations across the building that offer hands-on challenges that require collaboration through communication , critical thinking , and creative approaches all while demonstrating good citizenship with one another , teachers , and event volunteers . The “ Book Bridge ” challenge requires each team to build a freestanding bridge to span a specified distance while supporting a cup in the middle of the bridge with as many small weights as possible .
