GREENSBURG YMCA ENHANCES WELLNESS PROGRAMS TO SOOTHE BOTH MIND AND BODY
The Greensburg YMCA has enhanced its wellness programming and added several new opportunities to focus on both mind and body . There are three new programs included .
Peace on Earth Sound and Yin Yoga : This is a four-week therapeutic sound , healing and yin yoga workshop . Sound therapy is highly effective at triggering relaxation responses , which counters the many symptoms caused by chronic stress , while helping to balance the whole being , according to Brenda Willett , director of sports and wellness . Jeffrey Donegan from Peaceful Warrior Yoga teaches a 40-minute yin practice with a 20-minute sound bath . Participants are required to bring their own mats , and pillow / bolsters and blankets are recommended . The first workshop was held in December ; check online for others .
A “ Get Moving … Jump Start Your Motivation ” initiative : This six-week program , which began Jan . 8 and runs through Feb . 12 on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:15 to 7:15 p . m ., helps motivate individuals to strive for excellence in and out of the gym , overcome obstacles by giving and sharing support , and identifying shared adversity . The goal is to help individuals realize their full potential , while introducing movement in one ’ s lifestyle in fun and creative ways . The cost is $ 185 for members and $ 235 for nonmembers .
Weightlifting Basics : This is a fourweek seminar Jan . 24-Feb . 14 , Wednesdays from 2 to 3 p . m ., to teach the basics of weightlifting safety and etiquette in the weight room . The program also will demonstrate the proper form for the safest and most effective methods to lift weights . The cost is $ 55 for members and $ 75 for non-members .
“ There is such a strong interest across the country in health and wellness and it is growing ,” said Willett . “ We have so much to offer at the Greensburg Y , and we want to be the place to go for the most innovative and enjoyable health and wellness programming .”

KEYNOTES MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION 2024
Keynotes is accepting applications for its 2024 music scholarship competition , which will be held May 11 at the Fine Arts Theatre of Mt . Lebanon High School in the South Hills . Cash awards totaling more than $ 16,000 will be available .
Requirements are : Instrumentalists must be under 26 years of age by June 1 , 2024 , and vocalists must be under the age of 30 ; the student must be a full-time music major at a college , university or music school or a graduating high school senior accepted for admission as a fulltime music major ; and contestants must be current legal residents of Pennsylvania for one year , or if out-of-state , attending a school in Pennsylvania and can provide proof of a PA address — for example , campus or apartment address ( school mailings ) or utility bills .

THE WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY IS TURNING 50 AND HAS BIG PLANS TO CELEBRATE !
The Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society ( WPGS ) announced that it is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year . In honor of the occasion , a committee of dedicated members is planning a special conference and dinner .
“ Fifty years is such a milestone . We are delighted to mark it by hosting locals and visitors in Pittsburgh ( and virtually ) for this family history conference ,” said the society ’ s president , Pamela Israel . “ Post-pandemic , we are hearing about many people who want to research and learn from leading genealogists in person , so we are thrilled our 50th affords this opportunity while also extending our reach to people unable to travel .”
Founded in 1974 , WPGS focuses on the western 26 counties of Pennsylvania and invites the entire Western Pennsylvania community to join the anniversary celebration . Following is a brief overview of the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society ’ s 50th Anniversary Celebration .
