Surgeons gain precision with robotics ROBOTIC SYSTEMS GIVE SURGEONS A TINY HAND Surgeons at Forbes Hospital have super powers. The da Vinci ® Xi™ Surgical System allows them to virtually extend their reach and vision with sophisticated robotic instruments, 3D-HD visualization, intuitive motion, and an ergonomic design. Surgeons are always in complete control during robotic- assisted surgery, which translates hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments. The Xi System gives a highly magnifi ed, well-lit, 3D view inside the patient’s body. Forbes physicians use the da Vinci Xi Surgical System for cancer, gynecology, urology, thoracic, cardiac, and general surgery. Patients gain the benefi ts of less trauma, smaller incisions, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery. Dr. McCormick clears out cancer James McCormick, DO, surgeon at AHN, has been doing minimally invasive colorectal surgery for over 15 years and robotic surgery since 2012. “We are happy to have the robotic platform to help with more complex surgeries,” he said. “It improves visualization and detail, which, enhances precision and safety, and leads to a shorter stay and quicker recovery. More aesthetically pleasing results are important to our younger patients.” AHN surgeons have performed over 800 robotic procedures, the highest volume in the region and among the highest in the northeastern U.S. AHN is accredited by the Commission on Cancer as a Rectal Cancer Center of Excellence, emphasizing multidisciplinary coordination and collaboration. “About 20 experts across various specialties get together every week for the tumor board. We review every cancer patient and agree on what is most appropriate for that individual,” said Dr. McCormick.
