Synan   The Murrysville Recreation Department and Public Works Department are busy with a myriad of park projects and special events that will span fall of 2018 through spring of 2019. PROJECTS EVENTS Murrysville Community Park is seeing additional improvements with the development of the riparian buffer area at the corner of Farm and Wiestertown Roads. The project is partly funded by a grant from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Community Conservation Partnerships Program and the Bureau of Recreation and Conservation. The riparian buffer project will see close to 400 plants and trees planted along the headwaters of Steele’s Run, a high-quality cold water fishery stream. In addition to the plantings, a new parking area, pavilion, walkway, bench seating and overlook will be created, offering scenic views of the plantings as they mature. Volunteers from multiple community organizations and businesses will assist with the project, which should be completed in spring of 2019. Children will soon enjoy a brand new playground at Murrysville Community Park complete with structures for ages 2-5 and 5-12, including a zip line! The splash pad will surely keep everyone cool on those hot summer days with a 50’ splash pad area and six different types of water features. Excavation at the site has begun and installation of both the playground and splash pad will commence in spring of 2019. The municipality’s website has a new look after the launch of the new website on September 24. After nine months of development and content building, the site promises to provide residents with a much more informative experience. Guests can subscribe to “Notify Me” to receive alerts, newsletters, agendas, upcoming events and more. Another new feature is “Report a Concern” allowing guests to report a concern directly to a department, such as a pothole, road hazard, storm water problems and traffic complaints. The transition was seamless, as the website address remains the same: www. murrysville.com . The Recreation Department and Police Department websites were included in the launch and their sites also have the same address, www.murrysvilleparecreation.com and www.murrysvillepolice.com. The departments are also available from the homepage of the Murrysville site by selecting Departments from the top main menu. Any questions about the site or general questions for the municipality can be emailed to info@murrysville.com. October was busy for the Recreation Department with the hosting of the American Veterans Traveling Tribute Vietnam Wall and the 11th annual Chili Oktoberfest. The Traveling Vietnam Wall was on exhibit at Murrysville Community Park October 10-14. Over five days the community gathered to pay respects to the 58,318 service men and women who lost their lives during the Vietnam War. Franklin Regional School District and Mother of Sorrows School took the opportunity to educate their students by arranging field trips to see the Wall, where Vietnam Veterans escorted them through the many displays and told personal accounts of their experiences in the Vietnam War. Many volunteers and Veterans Service Organizations worked tirelessly for several months to make this an exceptional exhibit for the community. It couldn’t have been possible without so many generous private and business contributions. The 11th annual Chili Oktoberfest was held October 20 at the Murrysville Volunteer Fire Company pavilion on Sardis Road. In conjunction with the Murrysville-Export Rotary, this event continues to grow each year. Guests voted on 30 different types of chili, enjoyed a live band, college football on television, Rivertowne beverages, hot dogs and pumpkin painting. The Chili Oktoberfest proved again to be a great way to enjoy a fall afternoon! Night of Lights will be held Friday, December 7 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Town Square and 1st United Methodist Church. After the tree lighting, children and adults alike can visit with Santa, enjoy hot chocolate and cookies, listen to live holiday music, make holiday crafts and stroll through the Murrysville Historical Society’s toy display! Guests can also visit the Gingerbread Room and vote on their favorite gingerbread house, crafted by volunteers and families in the community. Proceeds from the voting benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Questions regarding the event or entering a gingerbread house can be directed to the Recreation Department at 724-327-2100 ext. 131.
