Franklin Regional Senior High School ( FRSH ) inducted 123 students into the National Honor Society ( NHS ) in the fall of 2020 . NHS is a service organization that is based upon four founding pillars : scholarship , service , leadership , and character . The purpose of this organization is to create enthusiasm for scholarship , to stimulate a desire to render service , to promote leadership , and to develop the character of students that attend secondary level schools .

Students that have been inducted into the National Honor Society serve their school and community by completing service hours in a wide range of ways . This school year , under the guidance of teacher / sponsor Mrs . Monica Bruno , senior high students were able to complete those hours serving younger Franklin Regional students within and beyond the school day . Three pathways were created for this service opportunity and include the “ Pen Pals ” and “ Zoom Buddies ” programs for elementary students and an after-school virtual tutoring program for Middle School students .
Currently , there are 118 NHS students communicating with 182 elementary students within the “ Pen Pals ” program . Primarily done asynchronously , some students exchange handwritten letters while others use email or shared Google Docs to communicate with each other several times a week . Exchanges between students range from personal interests , hobbies , and family to educational discussions . The high school students help and offer advice to their Pen Pals with academic work , share helpful resources , and offer encouragement and support . In addition to learning basic letter writing skills , students explore digital etiquette , gain an understanding of the expectations in formulating responsible emails , and the importance of timely responses .
Zoom , a virtual meeting platform , is the digital springboard for the NHS “ Zoom Buddies ” synchronous program . NHS students join elementary classes live and participate with them in a variety of lessons and activities . Many classes utilize virtual breakout rooms and students receive one-to-one or small group attention to practice reading fluency , brainstorm ideas for STREAM projects , create and edit writing assignments , and much more . This program is being utilized weekly in 15 classrooms across Heritage , Newlonsburg , and Sloan Elementary schools .
The NHS Tutoring Program is a virtual tutoring program provided by the NHS students for any Middle School student with a teacher referral . The tutoring sessions take place via Zoom on Monday , Tuesday , Wednesday , and Thursday evenings between 6:00-7:00 p . m . Using this online opportunity , Middle School students can get homework help at night regardless of their location . Each NHS student on duty is able to help multiple Middle School students in any subject area .
The opportunities provided through this three-pronged approach to internal outreach have resulted in meaningful relationships built between Franklin Regional students of all ages that will hopefully last for years to come .
