S
tudents at Newlonsburg Elementary are taking on the
role of a detective as they analyze handwriting samples
and dust for fingerprints, program Spheros to paint a
work of art, build and program a variety of robots, create
unique paper circuitry and examine the laws of physics with
fidget spinners! These hands-on activities are all part of
the STREAM (Science, Technology, Research, Engineering,
Arts, and Mathematics)
Forward grant being
piloted at Newlonsburg
with plans to extend
these activities and more
to all of the elementary
schools over the next
two years. STREAM Forward is an opportunity made possible
through an $11,000 grant gifted by the Franklin Regional
Panther Foundation.
Newlonsburg intermediate classroom teachers worked
collaboratively with gifted support teachers Carmen
Loughner and Stefanie Lynn as well as the principal, Tina
Gillen, to design the STREAM courses which will serve as a
springboard for a future STREAM based curriculum. Franklin
Regional expects to incorporate the STREAM framework into
all elementary grades with a focus on project-based learning
that emphasizes the concepts of engineering, design,
problem solving and critical thinking for all.
