F
or more than 30 years, The Rainbow Connection
Early Childhood Development Center has kept its
place as one of the largest and most popular places
for Murrysville’s littlest residents. It could be the
steadfast dependability — the center is only closed on six
legal holidays and has never closed because of inclement
weather — or it could be the fact that it has always offered
breakfast and lunch as part of the tuition package. But
regardless of the “why,” The Rainbow Connection is a
perennial favorite with parents.
“We do things a little bit differently and I think
parents appreciate that,” said Tami Renaldi, The Rainbow
Connection’s business manager and one of the founding
staff members. “We have an indoor gymnasium, so kids can
still get out of the classroom and run and play regardless
of what’s happening outside. This year, we opened up an
activity room with climbing walls, trampolines, and stability
balls in addition to our gym. Ever since we opened, we
thought about what would make us unique, and 32 years
later, it’s still working for us.”
While it may be a larger facility than most parents would
expect — it’s licensed for up to 157 children — each child at
The Rainbow Connection receives individualized attention.
A large outdoor playground is divided up by age groups
so that kids are always with peers of similar ages. There is a
storyteller who comes in twice a week, musical instruction
once a week and Spanish starting in the 4-year-old program.
In the summer each week has a theme, and activities are
catered to that theme. Children from 4 years old through

the fifth-grade level can partake in age-appropriate field
trips ranging from visits to local farms to Pirates games.
Right now, The Rainbow Connection is gearing up for
its summer camp season and parents are encouraged to
call at anytime. While other centers may have waiting lists
because of crowding, The Rainbow Connection prides
itself on being very flexible with parents and working hard
to accommodate everyone’s needs.
“Parents can call us any time of the year,” Renaldi said.
“We work with parents all the time to make the experience
as easy as possible for them and their children.”
For some parents, that may mean the convenient 6 a.m.
to 6:30 p.m. Monday-Friday hours. It could also be the low
turnover in staff — most of who have 25 years or more
under their belts.
Some parents may be looking for the state clearances
CPR and first-aid training that all The Rainbow Connection
staff have, while others may enjoy the fact that the center
is independent and not beholden to any particular faith
or creed. Still others could be looking for savings via The
Rainbow Connection’s sibling discounts. And, for any parent
looking to save even more, those who mention this article
will receive a free registration for their child — a $40 savings.
