STREAM Expo Showcases Innovative Learning Experiences AMERICAN LEGION AWARDEES E lementary and Middle School students participated in FR’s first STREAM Expo in May as part of the 2018 Pittsburgh Area Remake Learning Days. Students were excited to showcase their innovative learning experiences that incorporated Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. The STREAM Forward initiative was piloted at Newlonsburg this school year with plans to use the experience as a springboard to increase STREAM education across all three elementary schools. The program was made possible through an $11,000 grant that was awarded by the FR Panther Foundation. Teachers worked in collaboration with Newlonsburg Principal, Ms.Tina Gillen, to create project based courses that incorporated the elements of STREAM. The showcase was hosted by Sloan Elementary and consisted of various hands-on stations which were designed for students in Grades 3-6. Following the STREAM framework, activities introduced the concepts of engineering, design, problem solving and critical thinking. Student musicians showcased their artistic talents as they entertained the crowd of over 200 visitors. T he local American Legion posts honored six Franklin Regional students who demonstrated the characteristics of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship, and service. Nicholas Provenzo, Nina Pint, Jordan Satterfield, Danielle Price, Casey Huczko, and Thomas Nicely (not pictured) were nominated by their teachers and then voted on by their classmates for the awards. Murrysville, Export, and Delmont American Legion posts sponsored the awards. 36 MURRYSVILLE
