With an anticipated completion date of September for the first leg of the 9.2 miles Rails to Trails project from Trafford to Export,
Murrysville is busy with the construction of the Robert’s Trailhead which will be the terminus of Phase I. The Trailhead is located on a
parcel of ground between Airgas and the Patio Store across from the Branthoover jug handle on Route 22 in Murrysville
This project is a coordinated effort of the County of Westmoreland, the State of Pennsylvania and the Municipality of Murrysville
all contributing funds towards its completion. In addition, the Murrysville Public Works Department will participate in the effort by
constructing a wall and other infrastructure facilities.
The project will include:
• The construction of a thirty two space pervious paved parking area;
• Direct access for walkers and bicyclist from Old William Penn Highway;
• Direct access to the Heritage Trail from the parking lot area;
• A visitor’s center to be manned by local volunteers and provide literature
about the history of Murrysville, local businesses and tourist locations;
• Restroom facilities which will be available year round;
• Bike racks and a bike repair station; and
• A kiosk with a map of the entire trail highlighting key locations along the
way.
The contractor, Michael Facchiano, Contracting, Inc. began work the week of
July 17th and it is anticipated construction will be completed by September in
time for the opening of the first phase of the Heritage Trail.
