WHAT’ S NEWS IN MT. LEBANON
MT. LEBANON PUBLIC LIBRARY NAMED PENNSYLVANIA LIBRARY OF THE YEAR
The Pennsylvania Library Association( PaLA) honored Mt. Lebanon Public Library with its 2025 Library of the Year Award— recognizing its exceptional service, community leadership and steadfast commitment to protecting access to information for all. It became the first library in Allegheny County to receive the prestigious statewide honor.
PaLA praised the library’ s longstanding role as a community hub since 1932 and highlighted its impressive 2024 impact: more than 764,000 items circulated, nearly 1,500 programs hosted, around 35,000 program attendees, and more than 23,600 reference questions answered. The organization also noted the library’ s strong investment in professional development and statewide leadership, including Library Director Robyn Vittek’ s election as PaLA’ s 2nd Vice President and Chair of the 2025 annual conference.
A major factor in the award was Mt. Lebanon Public Library’ s bold step earlier this year to designate itself a“ Book Sanctuary”— the first public library in Pennsylvania to do so— affirming its refusal to remove or relocate materials that meet established selection standards. The designation underscored the library’ s commitment to intellectual freedom and ensuring that all patrons feel represented.
Vittek celebrates the award as a reflection of the entire Mt. Lebanon community, crediting the board, staff, Friends of the Library volunteers, and residents for supporting a welcoming, inclusive and literacy-driven environment.
