DIRECT CARE PHYSICIANS OF PITTSBURGH

Challenging The Health Care Status Quo

When was the last time you spent 30-60 minutes with your family medical doctor ? At Direct Care Physicians of Pittsburgh , this is a regular occurrence . In the traditional health care model that is dictated through insurances , Dr . Rebecca Byard recognized that there was too much emphasis for doctors to move quickly to see as many patients as possible and still provide quality medical care . Consequently , patients often feel rushed and unable to build good relationships with their doctors . Dr . Byard felt the same level of stress in her practice and missed the long-term connections that she wanted to build as a primary care physician .

As a result , she opened her own practice and joined Direct Care Physicians of Pittsburgh . This group of talented physicians is bringing affordable and accessible quality care for a better health care experience . Through the model of Direct Primary Care , doctors are able to take care of their patients in a manner that puts the patient first . From physicals and wellness visits to chronic illnesses , services address a wide range of standard , preventive and primary care needs . Patients have access to their physician in person , or through a cell or Zoom call , and insurance no longer dictates how long or how often patients may talk with their doctor .
For an affordable membership fee , patients have full access to their doctor , which certainly helps when building a solid doctor-patient relationship . Dr . Byard bills the patient directly for membership , taking insurance out of the equation . The amount of time a doctor can spend with patients using the membership model is making a difference for both the doctors and their patients .
One of the first attributes you will notice as a patient is Dr . Byard ’ s listening skills . Her bedside manner is exceptional because she takes the time to listen to what you are saying about your body . She is one of a handful of family medicine docs truly changing the status quo of health care , in favor of her patients .
The Direct Care Physicians of Pittsburgh office in Mt . Lebanon has been open for one year as of Oct . 1 . The group ’ s success using the membership model is evident , and their patient panels have grown exponentially . In addition to Mt . Lebanon , there are several practices available in and around Pittsburgh including Highland Park , Allison Park , and Wexford .
Dr . Rebecca Byard was born and raised in Pittsburgh . She graduated from Upper St . Clair High School in 1995 , afterward attending college and graduating from Chatham University with a biochemistry degree . She completed medical school at Marshall University and had a family medicine residency at The Washington Hospital until 2014 , at which time she stayed on as faculty . After spending four years in urgent care , Dr . Byard missed being a primary care doctor and opened her practice in Mt . Lebanon in October 2021 .
“ What makes direct primary care so special ? To me , it ’ s the ability to see my patients in their full humanity , to actively listen and take the time we need to create the best plan toward their wellness goals , and to know that I am the one dictating the care — not an insurance company or big-box hospital system .”
